Chapter 8 - the hearing grant prepared first
Grant appeared in court through video.
He wore a dark suit and spoke with the measured concern of a man accustomed to being believed.
“I served the Hartwell family for nineteen years,” he told the judge. “What occurred at the mansion was tragic, but the company cannot be destabilized by private accusations, impulsive voting changes, and competing arrests.”
He described Julian as consumed by guilt.
Clara as medically fragile.
Sienna and Lenora as compromised.
The board as leaderless.
Then he offered himself as the only neutral professional capable of protecting employees and shareholders.
Naomi stood beside Clara.
Julian sat at a separate table with his own attorney.
They had intentionally avoided presenting themselves as a united marital front. Grant’s argument depended on claiming Julian controlled Clara’s decisions.
Clara spoke for herself.
“Mr. Hall created false messages in my name, drafted documents transferring my rights, and paid the people who confined two witnesses.”
Grant’s expression remained calm.
“These accusations are based on documents discovered by individuals currently exercising control over the company.”
Naomi produced the jeweler’s surveillance, Paige’s statement, Grace’s records, and the financial ledger.
Grant challenged chain of custody.
He claimed Evelyn planted the evidence after developing an inappropriate fixation on Julian.
Evelyn testified without emotion.
Grant then displayed private messages in which she expressed concern for Julian’s exhaustion.
He attempted to turn professional loyalty into romantic motive.
The judge stopped him.
“Concern does not establish falsification.”
Grant shifted strategies.
He presented the original voting certificate and claimed Julian had voluntarily entrusted it to him months earlier.
Julian denied it.
The certificate bore Julian’s fingerprint.
That fact seemed damaging until Mason explained that Grant had handled the document during a routine trust review and could preserve or transfer the print.
The emergency seal was still required to activate the certificate.
Grant claimed he possessed a duplicate.
Naomi asked him to produce it.
He refused, citing security.
The judge denied immediate control but temporarily froze major Hartwell transactions until a full hearing could be held.
Grant had failed to take the company.
He had succeeded in slowing its response.
The freeze prevented the foundation from moving funds to assist Grace, Paige, and dismissed staff.
Clara recognized the tactic.
“He is making repair look financially dangerous.”
Naomi nodded.
“If victims become expensive enough, boards often begin wishing the problem would disappear.”
Clara used her personal resources to create an independent support fund.
Julian offered money.
She accepted only through a written agreement giving him no authority over distribution.
Their relationship had entered unfamiliar territory.
They still loved each other.
Love no longer excused undefined power.
After the hearing, federal agents attempted to arrest Grant for fraud and witness coercion.
The video connection came from an empty office.
He had used a pre-recorded loop timed to respond through an artificial voice system controlled by an assistant.
The real Grant was elsewhere.
The courthouse photograph had also been staged.
He never entered the building.
Dr. Shaw was found that afternoon inside a roadside motel.
He had overdosed on his own sedatives but survived.
At the hospital, he requested protection.
“Grant is eliminating anyone who can explain the treatment records,” he said.
Police asked where Grant was.
Shaw did not know.
He did reveal that the Montana facility belonged indirectly to Grant’s brother, Owen Hall.
Owen was a probate judge in another state.
He had approved emergency guardianships for several wealthy families using Dr. Shaw’s evaluations.
The scheme was larger than Clara’s case, though the known participants remained connected through Grant.
Families paid to make inconvenient spouses, elderly parents, or whistleblowing employees legally dependent.
Grant built documents.
Shaw built diagnoses.
Owen supplied orders.
Clara’s admission packet was not an improvisation.
It followed a tested model.
Federal investigators began reviewing prior cases one by one.
Naomi insisted they avoid assuming every guardianship was fraudulent merely because the same men were involved.
Each person deserved an individual investigation rather than another system treating identity as evidence.
One prior patient, Margaret Ellis, remembered Grace from the facility.
Grace had been placed in the room beside hers for three days before transfer.
Margaret also remembered a man visiting at night.
Grant Hall.
“He stood outside Grace’s room and said Clara would sign once the husband saw the videos.”
“What videos?” investigators asked.
Margaret described footage of Clara striking Sienna in the dining room.
No such event had occurred.
Grant had prepared synthetic or staged evidence.
Mason reexamined the mansion archive.
He found an edited clip showing Clara throwing a plate toward Sienna.
The original footage showed Sienna pushing the plate into Clara’s hands and striking her wrist until it fell.
Grant possessed both versions.
He planned to release whichever served him.
The diamond necklace appeared in another edited recording.
A fabricated clip showed Grace taking it from Julian’s study.
The timestamp placed her there while she was already confined at the cottage.
Grant’s evidence was not only selective.
Some of it had been manufactured completely.
Julian realized the court petition was a distraction from a more urgent threat.
If Grant released enough false footage, the public might stop believing any video—including the real evidence of Clara’s abuse.
Then Mason called.
A private media account had begun uploading mansion recordings anonymously.
The first clip showed Clara screaming at Lenora.
The beginning was missing.
The second showed Grace carrying a jewelry box.
The date was false.
The third showed Julian entering the kitchen and striking Sienna.
He had never hit her.
The fabricated videos were spreading faster than investigators could authenticate them.
