Rachel closed the ledger.
“You created a corporation, signed banking forms, moved money, and accepted ownership documents. At some point, not understanding becomes a choice.”
Parker Holdings owned a vacant commercial building on the edge of town.
The purchase price had been funded by the forged loan against Rachel’s apartment.
Marcus told the family the building would become a youth sports center.

Police searched the room.

It contained surveillance photographs of Rachel and Daniel, school schedules, copies of medical records, and notes about Rachel’s finances.
Marcus had tracked them for years.
One page calculated how long Rachel could survive financially after losing her apartment.
Another listed “pressure options”:

isolate from grandparents,
challenge parental fitness,
question Daniel’s paternity.
Rachel’s throat tightened.
Marcus planned to claim Evan was not Daniel’s biological father, invalidating Daniel’s rights to the insurance trust and company shares.
A laboratory report in the folder stated Evan was excluded as Daniel’s father.
Rachel knew no paternity test had ever been conducted.
The report carried Dr. Samuel Pierce’s signature, the same physician who treated Walter’s heart condition.
Andrea requested the laboratory chain of custody.
No sample from Daniel existed.
The report had been fabricated.
But a separate envelope contained two used toothbrushes labeled Daniel and Evan.
Someone had collected real genetic material.
Evan’s toothbrush had been recovered from storage after his death.
The independent laboratory performed testing with Rachel’s consent.
The result confirmed Evan was Daniel’s father.
Marcus’s planned challenge collapsed.

Marcus and Evan were half-brothers.

Marcus had sabotaged the truck of the brother he never knew he had.
Walter had protected one son after losing another.

“You told me the affair ended without a child.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.
