Chapter 9 - THE RED CARDIGANLinda denied visiting the bridge.

She owned a red cardigan but claimed she wore it at home during the family confrontation.

Walter remembered otherwise.

“Linda left before I did.”

She looked at him.

“You said you didn’t see me go.”

“I lied to protect you.”

Rachel stared between them.

“What did she do?”

Linda began shaking.

She admitted following Evan after he left the house.

She wanted to persuade him not to expose Marcus until the underground repair was complete.

She parked near the bridge and approached Evan’s truck while he argued with Marcus.

“When Marcus walked back to his pickup, I went to Evan.”

“Did you touch the brake line?” Andrea asked.

“No.”

“Did you touch the truck?”

“I opened the passenger door.”

“Why?”

“To remove the report.”

Evan caught her.

He told Linda that every adult in the Bennett family treated documents as more valuable than children and lives.

Then he ordered her away.

She returned to her car before Walter arrived.

The witness saw her near the passenger side, not the rear wheel.

Marcus still remained the only person filmed crouching beside the brake assembly.

Yet Linda revealed another fact.

Marcus did not carry the bolt cutter when he followed Evan.

Walter did.

She had seen Walter take it from the workshop after the argument.

Walter’s face drained.

“I brought it because Marcus said a cable was hanging beneath the truck.”

“What cable?” Rachel asked.

“He did not say.”

Walter reached the bridge and handed Marcus the tool. He claimed he believed Marcus wanted to remove damaged metal from the undercarriage.

Marcus crouched near the rear wheel.

Then returned the cutter.

Walter never asked what he did.

“You gave him the tool,” Rachel said.

“Yes.”

“You watched him use it.”

“Yes.”

“And after the crash?”

“I knew.”

The admission changed the case.

Walter may not have planned the sabotage, but he understood immediately afterward and concealed it.

Marcus’s attorney attacked the confession, arguing Walter was protecting Linda and seeking leniency.

Prosecutors continued building the case.

Meanwhile, Rachel focused on keeping Marcus Construction operating under supervision. Two hundred employees depended on paychecks.

The financial review showed the company could survive if luxury expenses stopped and fraudulent contracts were terminated.

Marcus had spent more on personal vehicles, private clubs, and house improvements than the company paid in employee health coverage.

Rachel redirected emergency funds toward payroll with court approval.

Some workers distrusted her.

Others brought records Marcus had forced them to falsify.

A foreman named James Cole approached her.

He had no relation to Evan despite sharing the surname.

He handed her a sealed envelope Evan left with him.

“Why didn’t you bring this earlier?” Rachel asked.

“Evan told me to give it to Daniel when he turned eighteen.”

“What changed?”

“I saw the barbecue video.”

The envelope contained a letter.

Daniel, if you are reading this, I failed to solve something before it became your burden. Marcus believes the family business belongs to him because Walter told him he was the only son. That is not true. But there is another child Walter never acknowledged.

Rachel looked at Walter.

“How many children did you hide?”

He appeared genuinely confused.

Evan’s letter named a woman.

Rebecca Shaw.

She had worked in the Bennett office twenty-seven years earlier.

Public records showed she had one daughter, Allison Shaw, now thirty-six.

Rachel’s age.

The same age as Rachel.

Andrea searched further.

Allison’s birth certificate named no father.

If Walter fathered her too, the trust had another heir.

Walter insisted he never had a relationship with Rebecca.

Linda looked toward him.

“That is the first thing you’ve said I believe.”

The letter continued.

Evan believed Rebecca’s child belonged to someone else in the family.

Not Walter.

Marcus.

But Marcus would have been fourteen when Allison was born—impossible.

Then Rachel saw the date more carefully.

Rebecca’s daughter was not thirty-six.

The digital record had been altered.

Her actual age was forty-six.

Marcus had been twenty-three.

👉 Evan’s final letter revealed Marcus may have another child whose existence could dismantle every inheritance claim now surrounding Daniel.
