Chapter 1 - The Stroller Beside Rittenhouse Square

Days before his wedding, Evan Mercer finds his missing ex girlfriend pushing triplets with his gray eyes and discovers a letter from his own mother may have stolen four years of their lives.
Rachel Ames pushed the black triple stroller faster down the Philadelphia sidewalk as if speed could erase recognition.
Spring sunlight poured through the green trees beside Rittenhouse Square, bright and gentle, cruelly beautiful against the panic tightening her chest.
Upscale storefronts gleamed behind her.
A beige shoulder bag slipped down her arm.
One of the babies stirred.
The little girl nearest the outside turned her face toward the man behind them.
Gray eyes.
Evan Mercer’s gray eyes.
Rachel gripped the stroller handle until her knuckles went white.
“Rachel!”
She did not stop.
She had imagined hearing his voice for four years.
In dreams, it was softer.
In nightmares, colder.
In real life, it cracked down the sidewalk with disbelief and pain.
Noelle Stanton’s hand tightened around Evan’s arm, but he broke away.
His navy suit moved sharply in the sunlight as he strode after Rachel, open collar loose at his throat, one hand extended like he was trying to stop a memory before it disappeared again.
“Rachel, stop. Are they mine?”
Rachel froze.
Not because she wanted to.
Because the question struck the exact place she had spent four years boarding up.
The stroller wheels stopped near a storefront window.
The three babies shifted in their seats, pale outfits bright against the black stroller fabric.
Rachel did not turn at first.
She stared at her hands.
At the stroller.
At the little socks.
At the ordinary sidewalk beneath a life that had never been ordinary again after Evan vanished from it.
Then she turned slowly.
Evan’s face changed the moment he saw the children fully.
Not just surprise.
Collapse.
His eyes moved from one baby to the next, then stopped on the little girl with his unmistakable gray stare.
Rachel’s throat tightened.
“You told me never to contact you again.”
Evan shook his head once.
Confusion cut through his face.
“No.”
Noelle stepped forward immediately, blush-pink satin dress catching the light, beige chain-strap handbag pressed against her side.
“Evan, we’re leaving. Now.”
Evan pulled his arm free without looking at her.
The diaper bag hanging from the stroller shifted.
An old cream envelope slipped out and landed on the pavement between them.
Rachel reached down too late.
Evan picked it up.
Her face went pale.
“That letter came from your mother.”
Noelle’s color vanished.
Evan looked from the envelope to Rachel, then to the triplets.
