Chapter 4 - The Child With Gray Eyes

The little girl nearest Evan stared at him without fear.
That was what undid him most.
Not the resemblance.
Not only.
The trust.
She looked at him as though adults did not yet know how to be dangerous.
Her tiny hand reached again, this time not for the envelope, but toward Evan’s sleeve.
Rachel pulled the stroller back an inch.
Evan noticed and stopped himself from reaching.
That restraint mattered.
Rachel saw it.
So did Noelle.
The girl’s gray eyes caught the sunlight, and Evan’s face changed with something close to grief.
“What’s her name?” he asked.
Rachel did not answer.
His jaw tightened, but he did not press immediately.
He looked at the two boys instead.
They shifted in the stroller, identical in their pale formal outfits but not identical in expression. One watched Noelle’s glittering handbag. The other frowned at Evan as if deciding whether this stranger deserved attention.
Three babies.
Three entire lives.
Evan looked like a man standing at the edge of a room he should have entered years ago.
Noelle moved beside him, her voice low.
“This is manipulation.”
Rachel’s eyes snapped to her.
“Do not call my children manipulation.”
Noelle recoiled at the force in Rachel’s voice.
Evan stepped slightly between them.
“Noelle, stop.”
Noelle stared at him.
The command was not loud, but it carried finality she had not expected.
Her face tightened.
“You don’t even know if—”
She stopped.
Too late.
Rachel heard the unfinished sentence.
Evan heard it too.
If.
If they are yours.
If she is lying.
If this is real.
The sidewalk seemed to tighten around the word.
Evan’s hand closed around the envelope.
“You were about to say something.”
Noelle’s smile returned, brittle and bright.
“I was about to say this is emotional blackmail.”
Rachel laughed once.
It came out broken.
“Emotional blackmail? I crossed this street trying not to let him see me.”
Evan looked at her sharply.
“Why?”
Rachel’s lips trembled.
“Because the last time I believed someone from your family, I lost everything.”
Noelle’s eyes darted toward the envelope.
Again.
Evan saw.
The movement lasted less than a second, but it shifted the whole scene.
He looked from Noelle to Rachel.
Then down at the cream paper in his hand.
His voice lowered.
“What does Noelle know about this?”
Noelle’s face drained.
May you like
Rachel stared at him, suddenly realizing he had asked the question she had not dared form.
