Chapter 6

The house search occurred after Detective Park obtained a warrant based on the forged medical instructions, hidden camera photograph, portal logs, and draft guardianship petition.

Investigators recovered five cameras.

Bedroom smoke detector.

Kitchen clock.

Living-room speaker.

Hallway thermostat.

Guest-room lamp.

Colin claimed they were security devices.

None faced exterior doors.

They faced me.

The server contained months of footage organized into folders.

MARA PAIN EPISODE.

MARA REFUSES HOUSEWORK.

MARA DEPENDS ON EVELYN.

MARA DRUGGED—GOOD.

The last folder had been created after surgery.

A video showed Colin placing two blue tablets inside a white prescription bottle.

Another showed Ashley printing the altered instructions.

Audio from the kitchen captured their conversation before her family arrived.

Ashley:

She needs to be downstairs when Mom and the kids are here.

Colin:

She can barely walk.

Ashley:

Exactly. If she refuses, she’s incapable. If she tries and falls, she’s medically unstable.

Brent:

What if she tears something?

Ashley:

Then she goes back to the hospital confused and medicated. Kline files Monday.

Colin:

I don’t want her permanently injured.

Ashley:

You want to lose the restaurants?

Silence.

Then Colin:

No.

The recording did not show him enthusiastically planning my injury.

It showed him deciding Ashley’s business mattered more than my body.

That distinction did not save him.

Another video showed Dr. Malcolm Kline visiting our house two nights before surgery.

He sat with Colin and Ashley in the dining room.

Kline:

Postoperative delirium can be temporary. The court will want immediate observations.

Ashley:

Can you certify without seeing her?

Kline:

I can conduct a telehealth assessment.

Colin:

She won’t cooperate.

Kline:

Noncooperation itself is clinically relevant.

Every response had been prepared to support the conclusion.

If I spoke calmly, they could call me emotionally flat.

If I cried, unstable.

If I refused, oppositional.

If I obeyed and collapsed, impaired.

Like a rigged staircase, every direction led downward.

The search also found the folder.

Inside were:

The guardianship petition.

The Crestwood loan agreement.

My forged consent.

The fraudulent home-equity documents.

A letter supposedly signed by my mother approving trust distributions.

A medical directive removing Evelyn and naming Colin.

Photographs of me sleeping after pain medication.

And a typed statement for Ashley’s children’s babysitter to sign.

Mrs. Daniels frightened the children by screaming and refusing to prepare food.

The babysitter had not attended.

They intended to say she had.
