Chapter 1 - The Edge of the StormElena Mercer knew Victor had lied the moment he stopped the SUV beside the cliff.

He had told her they were driving to a private winter lodge overlooking the Oregon coast. He had promised fireplaces, doctors on call, and one final quiet weekend before the baby arrived.
Instead, there was only snow.
The narrow coastal road ended beside a frozen overlook where the Pacific crashed against black rocks hundreds of feet below. Wind tore across the cliff with enough force to shake the vehicle. The sky was a violent blue-gray, heavy with another approaching storm.
Elena remained in the passenger seat with both hands resting over her stomach.
She was nine months pregnant. Every movement required care. Her lower back ached, her feet were swollen, and the baby had been unusually quiet since morning.
Victor stepped outside first.
His dark wool coat snapped in the wind. He walked around the vehicle and opened Elena’s door with exaggerated gentleness.
“We’re here,” he said.
Elena looked past him.
There was no lodge.
No driveway.
No building anywhere.
Only the icy path leading toward the cliff.
Serena stood near the rear of the SUV, wrapped in a pale winter coat. She had introduced herself months earlier as Victor’s new investment consultant. Elena had discovered the truth only three days ago.
The hotel records.
The private messages.
The insurance amendment.
The fifty-million-dollar policy on Elena’s life.
Victor had not denied the affair when confronted.
He had denied everything else.
Now Serena would not meet Elena’s eyes.
“Where is the lodge?” Elena asked.
Victor smiled.
“Just beyond the ridge.”
Elena did not move.
The storm seemed to pause around them.
Then Victor reached into the vehicle and closed his hand around her wrist.
The smile disappeared.
“Get out.”
Elena’s heart began pounding.
She tried to pull away, but her body was slow and heavy. Victor yanked her forward. Her boots struck the icy road, and pain tightened across her abdomen.
Serena flinched.
“Victor, she can barely walk.”
“She can walk far enough.”
Elena stared at Serena.
“You knew.”
Serena’s lips parted.
No answer came.
Victor dragged Elena toward the cliff path. Snow struck her face. Each step slid beneath her. She shielded her stomach with one arm while fighting Victor’s grip with the other.
“You filed the policy,” Elena said through the wind.
Victor looked back.
For the first time, fear entered his expression.
Then it became anger.
“You had no right to search my office.”
“It was my company.”
“It was your father’s company.”
The words revealed what he had always believed.
Elena had inherited wealth.
Victor believed he had earned the right to control it simply by marrying her.
They reached the edge.
Below, the cliff fell in jagged stages toward the freezing ocean. Halfway down, narrow shelves of rock disappeared beneath blowing snow.
Elena stopped.
Victor shoved her once between the shoulders.
She caught herself.
Serena stepped forward.
“This was supposed to look like an accident.”
Elena turned toward her.
Supposed to.
Not might.
Victor grabbed Elena’s coat near the collar.
“You should have signed the transfer.”
“You would have killed me anyway.”
His face twisted.
He pushed harder.
Elena’s boots lost their grip.
For one suspended second, she remained at the edge with her arms reaching toward the man she had once trusted.
Then Victor shoved her backward.
Elena fell.
The sky turned above her. Snow filled her mouth. Her scream vanished into the storm.
Victor leaned over the edge.
“Don’t worry, Elena. Your baby won’t suffer long.”
She saw Serena behind him, frozen in horror.
Then the cliff wall rushed upward.
Elena struck a narrow icy ledge halfway down.
Pain exploded through her body.
She curled around her stomach, unable to breathe.
Far above, Serena’s voice carried faintly through the wind.
“Is she dead?”
Victor answered without hesitation.
“For fifty million dollars? She better be.”
Elena pressed one trembling hand against the snow.
She could not move her legs.
She could barely feel the baby.
But she was alive.
And as Victor and Serena disappeared from the cliff edge, Elena understood something they did not.
Her father had never trusted Victor.
Before his death, Adrian Mercer had placed a private emergency tracker inside the silver maternity bracelet Elena wore every day.
Victor believed he had thrown her into an empty storm.

But somewhere, a signal had already awakened.
👉 Elena had survived the fall, but the icy ledge beneath her was beginning to crack.
