Chapter 3 - The Dead Man in the SearchlightAdrian landed hard on the icy ledge.

His boots slipped once before he caught the rescue cable with one hand and dropped to his knees beside Elena.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Elena stared at his face.

The gray hair.

The deep lines around his eyes.

The scar near his left temple from a car accident when she was a child.

No photograph could have created the warmth of his breath in the freezing air.

No hallucination could have made his gloved hand close around hers.

“Dad?”

His expression broke.

“I’m here.”

Elena tried to lift herself.

Pain forced her down.

“You died.”

“I know what you were told.”

She could not understand the sentence.

Adrian placed one hand gently over hers where it rested on her stomach. His face changed as he felt how cold she was.

“You are not dying here.”

The command was not loud.

It did not need to be.

Elena had heard that tone throughout her childhood. During storms. During board crises. At the hospital when her mother died.

Adrian used that voice when fear was allowed but surrender was not.

He examined the ledge quickly.

Her right ankle appeared broken or badly sprained. Blood marked the edge of her hairline, restrained but visible. Her breathing was shallow. Contractions were beginning.

Adrian signaled toward the helicopter.

A rescue specialist lowered a second harness.

Elena grabbed Adrian’s coat.

“Victor.”

“We know.”

“Serena was there.”

“We know that too.”

“How?”

“The bracelet transmitted impact data and audio.”

Elena stared at her wrist.

The device had recorded Victor’s final words.

Her baby won’t suffer long.

Fifty million dollars.

The confession existed outside the storm.

Adrian secured the rescue harness around Elena’s shoulders and beneath her legs. He adjusted it carefully around her pregnancy, using a reinforced support sling carried by the helicopter team.

Another contraction struck.

Elena cried out.

Adrian held her face between his hands.

“Look at me.”

She forced her eyes open.

“Breathe with me.”

He counted slowly until the contraction eased.

The helicopter hovered above them, fighting the wind. Its searchlight turned the snow into a violent white curtain.

The ledge cracked again.

Adrian looked down.

A section beneath his left boot separated from the cliff.

He shifted closer to Elena.

The rescue line tightened.

They began rising together.

Elena looked toward the ocean far below. The height made the world spin. She buried her face against Adrian’s coat.

“I thought you were dead.”

“You were supposed to.”

Her mind caught on the words.

“Why?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Because Victor tried to kill me first.”

Elena lifted her head.

The helicopter pulled them above the ledge.

The storm swallowed the place where she had nearly died.

Inside the aircraft, medics wrapped heated blankets around Elena and placed oxygen over her face. Adrian remained beside her, one hand gripping the overhead rail and the other holding hers.

He looked older than he had six months earlier.

Thinner.

His left hand trembled when he believed she was not watching.

Elena wanted answers.

How had he survived?

Why had the family held a funeral?

Who knew?

But the pain came faster now.

The fetal monitor brought aboard the helicopter struggled to find a heartbeat.

A medic moved the sensor.

Nothing.

Elena’s panic surged.

“Where is my baby?”

“Stay still,” the medic said. “We’re trying.”

Adrian leaned closer.

The monitor emitted one weak sound.

Then another.

A fragile rhythm appeared.

Elena closed her eyes.

Adrian exhaled for the first time since reaching the ledge.

The helicopter turned inland toward a private hospital outside Portland.

Elena’s frozen clothing was cut away during transport. Heated fluids entered through an IV. Her blood pressure remained dangerously low.

Adrian used a secure phone.

“The subject believes she is dead,” he told someone. “Do not correct that belief.”

Elena opened her eyes.

“Victor?”

Adrian ended the call and looked at her.

“He has already filed the insurance claim.”

The absurdity was so enormous that Elena almost laughed.

She had been missing for less than an hour.

Victor had not searched.

He had not called emergency services.

He had gone directly to the money.

Something inside Elena changed.

Pain remained.

Fear remained.

But beneath them, another emotion awakened.

Clarity.

Victor believed he had won.

Elena’s lips moved into the smallest smile.

Adrian saw it.

May you like

For the first time since descending to the ledge, he smiled too.

👉 Victor had filed the claim before Elena reached the hospital, unaware that his own words were traveling with her.
