Chapter 2 - Eighteen WeeksBradley refused to leave the clinic.

He stood between the examination bed and the door, demanding that Dr. Cole reveal the donor’s identity. Tiffany remained seated beneath a white blanket, her face so pale that the freckles across her nose appeared darker.

Margaret recovered first.

“This is confidential medical information.”

Bradley turned on her.

“You authorized it.”

“I authorized treatment.”

“For Tiffany?”

“For the future of this family.”

Brittany closed the hallway door before the clinic staff could hear more.

Dr. Cole did not move from the monitor.

“The court preservation order prevents anyone from altering or removing this file.”

Margaret looked sharply at him.

“What court order?”

“One connected to financial transfers from the Whitlock children’s trust.”

Bradley’s anger shifted toward Brittany.

“You said those payments were hidden.”

“They were routed through three companies.”

“They were not hidden well enough,” the doctor said.

The clinic had received $640,000 from an investment account established for Connor and Madison. The payment covered Tiffany’s treatment, private genetic testing, security services, and long-term prenatal care.

Bradley stared at his mother.

“You used my children’s money?”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“The accounts were overfunded.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It was temporary.”

Everything within the Whitlock family became temporary when Margaret wanted permission to ignore it.

Temporary borrowing.

Temporary signatures.

Temporary lies.

The harm always became permanent for someone else.

Dr. Cole opened Tiffany’s intake history.

Her first procedure occurred twenty-one weeks earlier. The embryo transfer happened three weeks after that.

Bradley had been in London with Sarah and the children during the entire treatment period.

Tiffany claimed they began their affair after he returned.

“That was the agreement,” Margaret said.

Bradley turned slowly.

“What agreement?”

Tiffany began crying.

Margaret answered for her.

“The public relationship could not begin until Sarah’s investigators stopped watching you.”

“You knew Sarah was investigating?”

“She was asking questions about company accounts.”

“So you arranged my affair?”

“No one arranged your feelings.”

“But you scheduled her pregnancy.”

Margaret did not deny it.

Tiffany had undergone fertility treatment before Bradley ever kissed her.

The pregnancy was meant to appear spontaneous once the affair became public. Bradley would leave Sarah, present Tiffany as the mother of his future child, and use the emotional scandal to pressure Sarah into a fast divorce without financial discovery.

Bradley had believed he was the one controlling the timeline.

In reality, he had entered a role his mother prepared.

“Whose embryo is it?” he asked again.

Dr. Cole removed a page from the file.

The donor code was MW-02.

Brittany looked away.

Bradley noticed.

“What does that mean?”

“It is an internal archive number,” Dr. Cole said. “The original genetic profile was transferred from another clinic account.”

“Which account?”

The doctor hesitated because the name contradicted everything they had expected.

“Sarah Mason Whitlock.”

Bradley gripped the counter.

“No.”

Margaret spoke quickly.

“The label could refer to billing.”

Dr. Cole shook his head.

“It refers to a cryopreservation record.”

Sarah had undergone fertility preservation seven years earlier after complications during Madison’s delivery. Two embryos were created using her eggs and Bradley’s genetic material.

Bradley remembered signing the storage forms.

Sarah remembered being told both embryos were destroyed when the clinic’s preservation wing closed.

They had not been destroyed.

One had been transferred into Tiffany.

Bradley looked at the ultrasound.

The panic in his face changed into something deeper.

“If it was our embryo, then the baby is mine.”

“Possibly,” Dr. Cole said. “But the transfer records are incomplete, and the donor chain was altered. A paternity test is required.”

Tiffany stared at the screen.

“You told me it was an anonymous embryo.”

Margaret’s voice remained cold.

“You wanted a child.”

“I wanted my child.”

“You wanted security.”

Tiffany flinched.

Brittany approached her mother.

“We need to leave.”

Clinic security blocked the hallway.

No one was permitted to remove files, medication, devices, or biological samples.

Margaret reached for her phone.

The device displayed an alert.

Every Whitlock Development account connected to the clinic had been frozen.

A second alert followed.

The Palm Beach property purchase had been suspended.

A third showed a legal notice from Sarah’s attorney.

Demand for preservation of marital, trust, and reproductive records.

Bradley looked toward the doors through which Sarah was already miles away.

“She knew.”

Brittany shook her head.

“She knew about the money. She could not have known about the embryo.”

Tiffany touched her stomach.

“What happens to me?”

No one answered.

For months, Margaret had spoken about Tiffany’s pregnancy as the event that would create a new Whitlock family.

Now the woman carrying the child stood alone in a room full of people arguing about ownership.

Dr. Cole closed the file.

“The patient decides what happens medically. Not the Whitlocks. Not Sarah. Not the clinic.”

Margaret looked offended by the suggestion that Tiffany possessed authority.

Bradley noticed.

For the first time, he saw how closely his mother’s treatment of Tiffany resembled her treatment of Sarah.

Women were valuable while carrying something she wanted.

Bradley’s phone rang.

Sarah’s name appeared.

He answered immediately.

“Is this your embryo?”

Sarah’s voice was controlled.

“I don’t know.”

“You left the country knowing Tiffany might be carrying our child?”

“I learned after I left your office.”

“Come back.”

“No.”

“Sarah, if that baby is ours—”

“You do not get to use another child to order me home.”

The call ended.

At the airport, Connor looked up at his mother.

“Was Dad asking about the baby?”

Sarah placed the phone inside her purse.

“Yes.”

Connor hesitated.

“I saw Grandma give Tiffany a hospital folder before Dad met her.”

Sarah turned toward him.

“When?”

“Last Christmas.”

Bradley claimed he had met Tiffany in March.

Connor’s memory placed Tiffany inside the Whitlock estate three months earlier.

He opened his tablet and found a photograph taken accidentally while recording the Christmas tree.

Margaret stood near the fireplace handing Tiffany a navy folder.

The label was visible.

MASON-WHITLOCK EMBRYO INVENTORY.
