Chapter 6 - Brittany’s BargainSarah did not go downstairs alone.

Two security officers entered the archive first. Brittany placed the laptop on the desk and raised both hands.

She looked exhausted. Her cream suit was wrinkled, and the confidence she displayed in the mediator’s office had disappeared.

Connor and Madison remained upstairs with Maya’s assistant.

Sarah stood at the archive doorway.

“You used my mother’s security code.”

“Peter gave it to me.”

“Where is he?”

“Not until I have protection.”

“You forged my signatures.”

“I followed instructions.”

“You studied how easy they were to copy.”

Brittany flinched.

“I know what I did.”

“That is not the same as taking responsibility.”

Brittany requested immunity from both American and British authorities. She wanted access to independent counsel and protection from Margaret, Peter, and Whitlock private security.

Sarah did not possess the authority to promise any of it.

Maya contacted federal investigators.

Until they arrived, Brittany agreed to show one file.

The laptop contained an embryo inventory maintained by Peter Mason.

Rows of codes filled the screen.

SMW-01.

SMW-02.

SMW-03.

Three embryos were created using samples connected to Sarah Mason Whitlock.

Sarah had been told there were two.

One record showed storage terminated.

Another showed transfer pending.

The third showed live birth confirmed.

Sarah’s hands became cold.

“Madison?”

Brittany shook her head.

“These were created after Madison was born.”

“Then who was born?”

“The name is sealed.”

The live-birth date was five years earlier.

Somewhere, a child connected to Sarah’s genetic material might already exist.

Brittany opened the MW-02 file—the code used for Tiffany’s pregnancy.

The maternal source was listed as SM-Alpha.

The paternal source was listed only as Whitlock Continuity Line B.

Neither name was visible.

The embryo might involve Sarah.

It might involve another Mason woman whose identity was stored under Sarah’s account.

The record chain had been intentionally blurred so different adults could claim or deny parentage later.

“Why?” Sarah asked.

“Control,” Brittany said. “If the baby became useful, Mother could call it yours. If it became a problem, she could deny the connection.”

Sarah looked at the woman across the desk.

“Why help me now?”

“Because Peter plans to erase every original record.”

“And because?”

Brittany’s eyes filled.

“He told me I’m not Margaret’s daughter.”

The continuity files listed Brittany as the biological child of Evelyn Mason and Edward Whitlock.

Sarah stared.

“That would make us half-sisters.”

“Possibly.”

Sarah’s mother had been pregnant in the photograph beside Margaret. The note said one of them carried the wrong child.

Brittany might be that child.

Margaret may have raised Evelyn’s biological daughter.

Sarah may have been connected to Margaret in another way.

The files did not show complete DNA results.

Peter used uncertain identity to control both families.

Brittany had learned the truth six months earlier. Margaret convinced her to remain silent by promising control of Whitlock Development once Bradley’s divorce was complete.

Brittany accepted.

She forged Sarah’s consent, moved trust money, and helped arrange Tiffany’s embryo transfer.

“I thought I was taking back what my real mother’s family owed me,” she said.

“You took from my children.”

“Yes.”

“You placed a pregnancy inside another woman without informed consent.”

“Yes.”

“You smiled while Bradley told me there was nothing to divide.”

Brittany looked down.

“Yes.”

Sarah felt no immediate sisterhood.

Biology did not erase betrayal.

Brittany provided Peter’s location.

He was using a private research facility beneath the Virginia apartment owned in Madison’s name. A charter flight would leave London that morning, carrying encrypted copies from the Kensington archive.

Peter expected Brittany to deliver them.

She had come to steal Evelyn’s original ledger.

Instead, she surrendered.

Federal agents prepared coordinated raids in London and Virginia.

Bradley called while the operation began.

“Brittany contacted you.”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That your mother used all of us.”

“That’s not new.”

Sarah heard something in his voice she had rarely heard before.

Humility.

It arrived late and might not last.

“Are Connor and Madison safe?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Can I speak to them?”

“Not tonight.”

He accepted the answer.

Then he said, “Sarah, Tiffany’s baby may be ours.”

“It may also be someone else’s.”

“If it is ours—”

“There is no ‘ours’ until evidence exists, and no child becomes a reason to erase what you did.”

The line remained quiet.

“I know.”

Sarah ended the call.

Brittany opened one final folder before agents took the laptop.

It contained footage from Tiffany’s embryo transfer.

Margaret stood beside the medical table.

Peter Mason prepared the procedure.

Tiffany appeared sedated.

A fourth person entered carrying a cryogenic case.

Sarah recognized him immediately.

Bradley.

He had been at the clinic eighteen weeks ago.

His claim that he knew nothing was false.

Bradley had looked directly at the camera before the transfer began.

👉 Brittany exposed herself as Sarah’s possible half-sister, but the procedure footage showed Bradley had secretly attended Tiffany’s embryo transfer months before claiming their affair began.
