Chapter 7 - The Brother Who VanishedJulian Cross had been Vivian’s only sibling.

He was charismatic, reckless, and brilliant with pharmaceutical systems. Theodore hired him during the early years of Ashford Biomedical despite Vivian’s objections.

Julian later stole proprietary compounds and sold them to foreign buyers.

He was convicted after Theodore testified against him.

A prison transport vehicle crashed into a river twelve years earlier.

Two guards died.

Julian’s body was never recovered.

Vivian believed the current had taken him.

Detective Price believed otherwise.

“Too many people connected to Ashford disappear without bodies,” he said.

Theodore’s recorder contained dates, dosage notes, and a phrase Julian often used:

Helpless people tell the truth with their eyes.

Vivian remembered him saying it when their mother suffered a stroke.

Julian had always been fascinated by the difference between inability and ignorance.

The paralysis protocol carried his philosophy.

Dr. Lane was not Amelia’s principal medical partner.

He had been trained by Julian.

Police searched Ashford Biomedical’s old personnel archive. Julian’s file showed unauthorized access six months before Theodore’s first symptoms.

The user credential belonged to Adrian.

Adrian had been meeting his stepmother’s supposedly dead brother long before the fire.

Price questioned him again.

This time, Adrian did not pretend ignorance.

“Julian contacted me two years ago,” he admitted.

“What did he want?”

“To expose Vivian.”

“For what?”

Adrian looked toward the table.

“He said she helped Theodore steal his research and arranged his conviction.”

“Did you believe him?”

“He had documents.”

The documents showed Vivian signing an internal complaint that led to Julian’s investigation.

She had reported her own brother.

Julian told Adrian that Theodore rewarded her with marriage and control of the estate.

The truth was less convenient.

Vivian filed the complaint after discovering Julian had tested an unapproved compound on three rehabilitation patients.

One survived with permanent paralysis.

Julian did not deny it.

He called the injuries necessary data.

Adrian had been given fragments designed to turn moral action into betrayal.

“What did Julian ask you to do?” Price said.

“Monitor Theodore’s medication. Later, Vivian’s.”

“You knew what the toxin did.”

“I knew it made them weak.”

“You continued.”

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“My father was already dying.”

“He was being poisoned.”

“I didn’t know the dose was lethal.”

“And Vivian?”

Adrian had no answer.

The fire was no longer an isolated crime.

It was the final step in a two-year campaign.

Julian wanted Theodore dead, Vivian immobilized, Adrian disqualified, and Amelia elevated as successor.

But why help Amelia inherit?

Voss examined the trust.

A.A. received temporary authority only. After sixty days, the successor had to appoint a scientific director for Ashford Biomedical.

Amelia’s confidential appointment named Dr. Julian Cross.

The entire estate would return him to the company that expelled him.

Adrian had been used to remove Vivian.

Amelia had been used to restore Julian.

The hidden daughter believed she was reclaiming her birthright.

Julian wanted access to laboratories, patents, and military contracts.

Price issued international warrants.

A coast-guard aircraft reached the island laboratory.

It was empty.

The antidote refrigerator remained behind, along with Vivian’s treatment records.

Dr. Lane’s body was found near the dock.

He had been injected with the same compound used on Theodore.

Amelia and Julian had departed separately.

One security recording survived.

Amelia confronted Julian inside the laboratory after hearing Theodore’s confession.

“You told me Vivian approved the trials,” she said.

“She signed funding documents.”

“She didn’t know.”

“Knowledge is a luxury powerful people claim after harm is exposed.”

“You lied about what Father wanted.”

“I gave you a reason to act.”

Amelia raised a weapon.

Julian smiled.

“You still need me to reverse Vivian’s paralysis.”

The video ended.

No gunshot followed.

They may have remained allies.

Or one had taken the other hostage.

The antidote recovered from the island was genuine, but Dr. Brooks warned that administering it too quickly could stop Vivian’s heart.

Treatment began with a microscopic dose.

Hours later, Vivian’s left index finger moved.

Martin? No Martin here. Voss watched.

Vivian focused on the keyboard.

ADRIAN SAW ME MOVE BEFORE THE FIRE.

That explained the forged medical declaration.

He knew recovery had begun.

He did not attack because she was permanently helpless.

He attacked because she was becoming capable of identifying everyone.

Before Vivian could type more, Officer Reed entered carrying Adrian’s booking photograph.

“He’s gone.”

During a hospital transfer for toxicology testing, the transport vehicle was diverted by a forged emergency order.

The two officers assigned to him were unconscious.

A camera showed Adrian leaving the vehicle voluntarily.

The driver waiting for him was Julian Cross.

👉 Adrian’s escape proved that even after being sacrificed, he had chosen to return to the uncle who engineered his father’s poisoning.
