Chapter 8 - The Black LaboratoryVivian’s recovery progressed slowly.

She regained movement in two fingers and slight control of her left wrist. Dr. Brooks cautioned against optimism, but Vivian practiced until sweat covered her forehead.

Every movement was painful.

Every movement belonged to her.

Theodore’s recorder led investigators to a hidden data partition inside the wheelchair system.

It was labeled BLACK LABORATORY.

The files documented illegal research sites across the United States. Ashford Biomedical had developed compounds capable of inducing temporary paralysis, suppressing speech, altering breathing patterns, and imitating neurological disease.

The company marketed the technology as a nonlethal military tool.

Internal reports described interrogation potential.

Julian had designed the earliest formulation.

Theodore had approved funding.

Amelia had later managed field security under an alias.

Vivian’s ethics committee had received altered summaries.

No one emerged completely untouched.

Voss read a list of trial patients.

Some had been prisoners.

Some were injured veterans.

Four were children treated through a foundation program.

Vivian stared at their names.

She had attended fundraisers for that program.

She had believed the children were receiving experimental rehabilitation equipment.

Her ignorance had been cultivated.

But she had still lent her face to the institution.

She typed:

RELEASE EVERYTHING TO FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS.

Voss warned that Ashford Biomedical could collapse.

Thousands of employees might lose jobs.

Pension funds could be damaged.

Defense contracts would be suspended.

Vivian did not change her instruction.

PROTECT PATIENTS FIRST. COMPANY SECOND. NAME LAST.

The files were transferred to federal authorities.

Within hours, Ashford Biomedical’s board attempted to remove Vivian as acting chair based on medical incapacity.

The motion was introduced by A.A.

Amelia had activated successor authority remotely.

She claimed Vivian’s decision threatened national security and employee welfare.

The board scheduled an emergency vote at Ashford Manor because its secure network could not be accessed elsewhere.

Vivian insisted on attending.

Dr. Brooks objected.

Price objected.

Even Voss objected.

Vivian raised two fingers and used the wheelchair control for the first time.

She moved herself toward the door.

The decision was made.

That evening, Vivian entered the mansion again.

The damaged curtains had been removed. The marble floor was clean. The reinforced bedroom doors stood open under police control.

The board assembled inside the grand library.

Vivian faced them from her wheelchair while an eye-tracking screen projected her statements.

“Ignorance does not excuse the company,” the synthetic voice read. “Secrecy does not protect victims. It protects the people who created them.”

Several directors demanded proof.

Theodore’s confession played.

No one spoke afterward.

The vote shifted.

Five directors supported independent oversight.

Four supported Amelia.

The deciding vote belonged to Adrian’s trust shares.

Because he remained only accused, not convicted, his voting rights were frozen but not permanently forfeited.

Someone authenticated his identity remotely.

A video feed appeared.

Adrian sat inside an abandoned medical facility with Julian behind him.

“I vote to remove Vivian,” Adrian said.

Voss objected.

The trust required an uncoerced statement.

Adrian leaned toward the camera.

“I am not being forced.”

Vivian studied his face.

His pupils were unequal.

His breathing was shallow.

A fresh injection mark showed above his collar.

He had been dosed with the same toxin.

Julian was turning Adrian into the helpless witness Vivian had been.

Vivian typed:

ASK HIM TO LIFT HIS RIGHT HAND.

Voss repeated the request.

Adrian could not move it.

The vote was invalid.

Julian’s face appeared briefly in a reflection.

Then the feed cut.

The board appointed independent oversight.

Ashford Biomedical’s accounts froze.

The Black Laboratory files began generating arrests.

Vivian returned to the master bedroom under guard.

Her bedside monitor illuminated without warning.

This time, no one had activated it.

A live map showed dozens of properties connected to the illegal trials.

One red point flashed beneath Ashford Manor itself.

The original Black Laboratory had never been on the island.

It was beneath the mansion.

And Adrian’s tracking device showed he was already inside it.

👉 Julian had brought the poisoned Adrian back beneath the mansion, directly under Vivian’s supposedly secure bedroom.
