part 7

PART 7
Graduation morning was beautiful in the most painful way.
Blue sky.
Bright sun.
Rows of chairs.
Families carrying flowers.
Graduates taking photos beneath the old stone arch.
Audrey stood alone behind the stage in her maroon gown, holding her diploma folder before it was even real.
No family bouquet.
No proud parents.
No brother making jokes.
Just Maya near the side gate and Dr. Sterling on stage.
That should have hurt.
It did.
Then she saw them arrive.
Arthur in a gray suit.
Victoria in cream and pearls.
Julian in navy, looking nervous despite his expensive watch.
They did not carry flowers.
They carried anger dressed as disappointment.
The ceremony began.
Names were called.
Families cheered.
Audrey waited for her turn with her hands folded so tightly her nails marked her palms.
When her name rang across the courtyard, applause rose from a few classmates.
The diner owner whistled from the back row.
Maya clapped so hard Audrey almost laughed.
Dr. Sterling handed her the diploma folder.
“Congratulations, Audrey.”
His voice was quiet.
“You earned this.”
For one second, everything was worth it.
The hunger.
The basement apartment.
The shifts.
The forged loan disputes.
The nights she studied through tears.
She turned toward the steps.
Then Arthur moved into the aisle.
“Audrey!”
The crowd shifted.
Victoria grabbed Julian’s sleeve.
Arthur climbed two steps before security realized he was not supposed to.
Audrey froze.
He reached her near the edge of the stage.
His voice was loud enough for rows of families to hear.
“You don’t deserve that degree!”
Then he slapped her.
Her cap flew.
The world tilted.
The courtyard gasped.
Victoria pointed from below.
“You’re just a loser in a gown!”
Audrey’s cheek burned.
Her ears rang.
For one second, she was a child again at the kitchen table, being told to give Julian the bigger slice because he had a hard day.
Then she saw Dr. Sterling stand.
She saw Maya already moving.
She saw Julian’s face.
Terrified.
Not shocked.
Terrified.
Audrey bent and picked up her cap.
She stood straighter.
“Then let everyone hear why I had to earn it alone.”
Dr. Sterling turned to the podium attendant.
May you like
“Give her the microphone.”
