The microphone felt heavier than Audrey expected.
Or maybe that was the weight of four years trying to pass through one hand.
Security held Arthur back near the steps.
Victoria shouted that the school was humiliating a family.
Julian stood behind her, shaking.
The entire courtyard watched.
Audrey looked at the crowd.
Her voice trembled on the first word.
Then steadied.
“My parents told you I wasted my education.”
“They told relatives I was irresponsible.”
“They told people I needed to learn independence.”
She lifted the sealed folder.
“The truth is that my grandfather left an education fund for me.”
“My parents drained it before my first year ended.”
Murmurs spread through the crowd.
Arthur shouted, “That is a lie!”
Audrey turned toward him.

“It is three bank transfers.”
Dr. Sterling stood behind her, face grim.

“They used part of it to settle Julian’s legal trouble after his car accident.”
Julian flinched.

Arthur struggled against security.
“You ungrateful brat!”
Audrey’s hand shook.
Maya stepped closer, but Audrey lifted her palm.
She would finish.
“Then they forged my name on a private loan.”
“They deposited the money into their household account.”
“They changed financial aid documents to make me lose support.”
“And every time I nearly dropped out, they called me a failure.”
The courtyard was no longer whispering.
It was boiling.
A professor covered her mouth.
A graduate in the front row said, “Oh my God.”
Victoria looked around and realized the room had turned.
She grabbed Julian.
“Say something.”

Arthur went still.

“Julian.”

Dr. Sterling stepped to the microphone.
