She contested responsibility for Nancy’s assault.
The prosecutor did not claim she ordered Ryan to strike.
The court examined her contribution accurately.
Margaret selected Nancy’s house.
Installed cameras without permission.
Scheduled the ledger exchange.
Allowed Mercer to believe the source could be killed.
Planned to reveal herself only after Ryan committed to a choice.
Failed to warn Nancy.
Used her resemblance to make another woman available as confusion.
Ryan supplied the sedative and bat.
Mercer supplied the elimination order.
Helena prepared the ambulance.
Margaret built the room.
Nancy testified.
“Did you believe I would be at church?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you confirm?”
“I saw your car leave.”
“I returned with a headache.”
“Yes.”
“Did you have a way to cancel?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I believed Ryan entering early meant the evidence would finally become clear.”
“You heard us through the camera.”
“Yes.”
“You heard me confront him.”
“Yes.”
“When did you call police?”
“After the strike.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
Nancy did not look away.
“You waited for the evidence you designed.”
“Yes.”
Margaret described her own history.
Thomas—actually Samuel—was raised as her older brother under false family records. Andrew recruited her into Meridian. Roland Mercer fathered Emily and threatened both children.
Margaret accepted surgery that made her resemble Nancy because the network said doubles protected the family.
She later used the resemblance for access, payments, and false trails.
She believed controlling the technique prevented men from using it worse.
Instead, she became part of its survival.
Emily submitted a written statement.
“You told me Ryan was safer without knowing I lived. You told Ryan I died. You allowed Thomas to control my account. Later, you said every choice protected both children. The protection always required us not to know what family we had.”
Ryan did not submit a statement.
His own sentence remained separate.
Margaret received a substantial custodial term followed by supervised release. Her cooperation, coercion, age, and evidence against the founders reduced the sentence. Her long participation and use of both children increased it.
She lost control over every witness fund and trust.
Lawful personal property remained after restitution.
The court did not order her children to support her emotionally or financially.
Emily chose occasional letters.
Ryan requested prison-to-prison correspondence and later regretted it after Margaret continued explaining his violence through Mercer’s manipulation.
He wrote:
You may explain what you taught me. You may not describe the bat as an outcome you could not imagine.
Margaret answered:
Understood.
Months passed before she wrote again.
The final ledger in her possession contained names of private companies receiving Black Harbor money. Some were criminal fronts. Others operated legitimate veterans’ housing and medical programs.
The receiver separated them.
Workers kept wages.
Residents kept homes where possible.
Executives who stole funds faced charges.
No program closed merely to make Margaret’s sentence appear larger.
During the audit, Emily discovered a trust worth nine million dollars in her name.
Roland created it from stolen medical funds. Thomas later added investment income. Margaret knew and never told her.
Emily had the legal option to claim the clean investment growth after restitution removed stolen principal.
She refused to decide publicly.
