She refused privacy.
Elaine, Christopher, and two federal agents attended.
Ryan entered wearing detention clothing provided after prosecutors obtained an emergency hold for witness intimidation and evidence destruction. No formal arrest for the assault had yet been announced publicly.
His confidence had weakened.
“Kelsey, I can take you to Thomas.”
“In exchange for what?”
“Protection from Mercer.”
“Not immunity?”
“I know I’m going to prison.”
The statement surprised everyone.
Ryan admitted stealing money, forging Kelsey’s credentials, hiding the first marriage certificate, and striking Nancy.
He did not call the assault an accident.
“I lost control because she read the transfer list.”
“You drugged her before she found you.”
“Yes.”
“That is planning.”
“I planned to search the cabinet. I did not plan to hit her.”
“You brought the bat from the garage.”
“I saw it after she confronted me.”
The distinction mattered legally.
It did not matter emotionally.
Ryan claimed Mercer ordered Thomas moved to Raven Rock, a restricted emergency facility. The general intended to force Thomas to authenticate the remaining Black Harbor accounts.
“What does Mercer want?” Elaine asked.
“The original funds are trapped behind Kelsey’s biometric authority. Thomas built it that way.”
“Why marry Kelsey?”
“To gain legal standing if she became incapacitated.”
Kelsey looked at him.
“Did you ever love me?”
“Yes.”
“Before or after you copied my clearance card?”
Ryan’s face broke.
“Both.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the truth.”
Love and exploitation had existed together.
The existence of one did not soften the other.
Ryan revealed Thomas had recruited him voluntarily. He was supposed to document Mercer’s transfers.
Then Thomas disappeared.
Mercer threatened Margaret.
Ryan continued working.
He kept some money.
The first stolen million frightened him.
The second made him feel powerful.
By the time he married Kelsey publicly, he no longer knew whether he was protecting her, monitoring her, or using her.
“You knew we were cousins,” Kelsey said.
“Last year.”
“And you stayed.”
“I thought telling you would expose Margaret.”
“You chose the marriage over the truth.”
“Yes.”
Ryan offered Raven Rock access codes.
In return, he wanted Margaret placed into witness protection.
Kelsey refused to negotiate family safety through personal promises.
Federal prosecutors could decide.
Ryan accepted.
The rescue team prepared.
Then the doctor entered with news about Nancy.
Her scans showed an older fracture near the same shoulder Ryan struck.
Nancy had been injured months earlier.
She never reported it.
Kelsey confronted her.
Nancy admitted Ryan shoved her during an argument after she questioned one of his property purchases.
“He said it was an accident.”
“You believed him?”
“I wanted to.”
“Did you tell Dad?”
Nancy stared.
“Thomas visited me that night.”
Kelsey went still.
Her father had been meeting Nancy secretly for months.
He knew Ryan was violent.
He still allowed Kelsey to remain inside the marriage.
“He said removing Ryan too soon would collapse the investigation,” Nancy whispered.
Kelsey turned away.
Thomas had placed national evidence above his daughter’s safety.
The rescue at Raven Rock began before dawn.
Federal and military internal-affairs teams entered through a maintenance tunnel.
The facility was nearly empty.
Thomas’s wheelchair remained in a medical room.
Blood marked an IV line.
A wall monitor showed a countdown connected to the Black Harbor accounts.
Mercer had moved Thomas again.
Ryan’s access code opened one terminal.
A recent flight plan appeared.
Destination: an offshore veterans’ rehabilitation center in the Chesapeake.
Owner: Monroe Strategic Recovery.
Kelsey’s company.
The center did not exist on public maps.
Ryan recognized the transport signature.
“Mercer isn’t moving Thomas away from Kelsey,” he said.
“He’s moving Thomas into a property she legally owns.”
If Thomas died there, Kelsey could be blamed.
If hidden funds were discovered there, she could be charged.
If Ryan testified she controlled the network, the documents would support him.
The operation was shifting every crime into her name.
Then the terminal opened a live feed.
Thomas sat inside a coastal medical room.
General Mercer stood behind him.
Mercer looked into the camera.
“Kelsey, bring Nancy to the island.”
Kelsey froze.
“Why?”
Thomas lifted his head weakly.
Mercer answered.
