Chapter 12 - The Agent Inside the WarrantMarcus struck the emergency alarm.

No response.
The vault ventilation system had switched from oxygen circulation to a medical sedative used at Valor House.
Mara recognized the sweet chemical odor from her rehabilitation appointments.
Grant covered his mouth with his sleeve.
“There’s a manual shutoff behind the blackmail wall.”
“How do you know?” Marcus asked.
“My father built the room.”
“Move.”
Grant hesitated.
Opening the maintenance panel would reveal another secret.
Mara drove her wheelchair toward him.
“If everyone loses consciousness, Everett decides which of us wakes up.”
That moved him.
Grant pulled a framed Honor Bridge photograph from the wall. Behind it was a red valve and a biometric reader.
He pressed his thumb.
Access denied.
HALSTEAD AUTHORITY REVOKED.
Everett had stripped his son of control.
Mara tried her pension biometric.
The valve opened.
Fresh air entered.
Grant stared at the screen.
Sentinel recognized Mara above him.
That was what Everett had been testing at the gala.
He never intended Grant to inherit the network permanently. He intended Grant’s violence and greed to disqualify him while forcing Mara to activate her authority.
“You were bait,” Mara said.
Grant’s face collapsed for one second before rage replaced humiliation.
“My father built everything for me.”
“No. He built you to reveal whether I would take it.”
Marcus reopened the vault using Mara’s authorization.
Alan Voss immediately ordered his team to detain Marcus and Mara.
His agents did not move.
They had watched Alan smile while the vault filled with gas.
One removed his own badge and stepped beside Marcus.
Judge Voss attempted to reach a private passage.
Nolan blocked him with his cane.
No one was handcuffed yet.
The scene remained too unstable, the evidence too broad, and the authority too contested.
Mara ordered the vault contents duplicated before anyone left.
An independent federal magistrate approved emergency preservation remotely.
For the first time, the Voss brothers could not control the next document.
Then Grant collapsed.
A medic discovered an irregular heartbeat and signs of chemical exposure. His attorney demanded immediate hospital transport.
Marcus suspected another escape plan.
The medic confirmed Grant required monitoring but not evacuation by private ambulance.
Alan Voss produced a federal medical-transfer order already signed.
The destination was Dr. Ellis’s rehabilitation hospital.
Mara recognized the trap.
“That hospital helped alter my records.”
Alan replied, “It is the nearest secure facility.”
“Use the county trauma center.”
“The order is mandatory.”
Marcus contacted the magistrate.
Before she could respond, mansion security alarms activated again. Fire doors separated the underground corridor. Alan’s agents moved Grant into an elevator.
Mara followed but the doors closed before she reached them.
Grant looked through the narrowing gap.
He no longer appeared ill.
The heartbeat alert had been triggered by a small device taped beneath his shirt.
The medical emergency was staged.
Marcus ordered the elevator stopped.
Alan’s cloned federal authority overrode him.
Grant reached the mansion’s service level and entered a waiting ambulance.
Celeste watched the security feed.
“He’s going to the manufacturing complex.”
“How do you know?” Mara asked.
“Dr. Ellis kept a private treatment room there for Everett.”
The ambulance left Ashcroft through a gate Alan had ordered opened.
Marcus’s team followed.
Alan and Judge Voss were placed under independent guard, but the brothers continued insisting national-security authority protected them.
Celeste asked to accompany Mara.
“No,” Mara said.
“I know the complex.”
“You also know how to warn Grant.”
Celeste looked toward Nolan.
Her brother said nothing.
She finally removed the emerald necklace’s empty chain from her purse and placed it in Mara’s left hand.
“The clasp had two compartments. Nolan’s ledger was in one. Grant’s access token is still in the other.”
An agent examined the chain.
A second chip emerged.
It contained a map of Halstead Meridian’s abandoned manufacturing complex and a live location signal.
Grant’s ambulance appeared on the screen.
Celeste had planted the tracker on him when he leaned over Mara at the gala.
“Why?” Mara asked.
Celeste answered quietly.
“Because I knew he planned to leave me behind.”
The tracker reached the complex.
Then it stopped inside a structure labeled:
SENTINEL CONTROL—AUTHORIZED BY ZOE BENNETT.
Mara stared at her former commander’s name.
Zoe was not merely a prisoner of Everett’s system.
May you like
She had helped build its final control room.
👉 Grant escaped through a staged medical transfer, while Celeste’s tracker led directly to a Sentinel facility authorized by Mara’s supposedly captive commander.
