Chapter 13 - Grant’s Last ContractHalstead Meridian’s abandoned complex stood beside the river thirty miles from Ashcroft.

Its factories had once produced military vehicles, armor panels, and adaptive equipment. After Everett’s supposed death, Grant closed the property and claimed the buildings contained hazardous material.

Federal teams entered through three gates.

No guards stopped them.

Every door stood open.

Mara arrived inside an armored medical vehicle with Marcus and Nolan. Celeste remained under supervision in a second transport.

The live tracker led toward the former design laboratory.

Inside, Grant stood beside a massive server console.

Dr. Ellis lay unconscious near the wall, breathing but restrained with medical straps. Grant had forced him to open the facility, then abandoned him.

Celeste was brought into the room.

Grant looked at her.

“You tracked me.”

“You planned to use my passport and leave me responsible for the accounts.”

“I offered you Mara’s life.”

“You offered me her place after destroying it.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“And you wore the necklace.”

Celeste had no moral reply.

Mara rolled forward.

“Step away from the console.”

Grant held up the black fountain pen from the gala.

Agents had sealed the original as evidence.

This was a duplicate.

The pen contained Mara’s captured signature pressure, voiceprint, and biometric rhythm.

Grant had kept a backup.

“I do not need you to sign anymore,” he said.

The Sentinel console displayed the pension-transfer agreement.

A synthetic version of Mara’s signature began forming.

Marcus ordered Grant to stop.

Grant pressed the activation key.

Transfer rejected.

COERCION EVIDENCE DETECTED.

The recording from the gala had permanently marked every related document as fraudulent.

Grant stared at the screen.

Mara looked at him.

“You forced the pen into my hand in front of federal agents.”

“You planned that.”

“I planned for you to reveal yourself. I did not plan the cruelty. That part belonged to you.”

Grant pulled a small pistol from beneath the console.

Agents raised their weapons.

Mara did not move.

Grant aimed toward the server drives rather than at a person.

“If I destroy Sentinel, none of you prove anything.”

A screen activated behind him.

Everett appeared.

“Put down the weapon, Grant.”

Grant looked over his shoulder.

“You revoked my authority.”

“You disqualified yourself.”

“You told me Mara was weak.”

“I told you dependency could be used. You mistook access for ownership.”

Mara heard Everett discuss her injury as a strategic condition again.

Grant’s voice broke.

“I did everything you asked.”

“You made the operation visible.”

“You ordered the convoy change.”

“You filed the route. You signed the contracts. You married the witness. You accepted the profits.”

Everett had preserved enough truth to sacrifice his own son while separating himself from direct paperwork.

Grant finally understood.

The foundation, affair, pension coercion, and gala humiliation had made him the public face of crimes designed by someone else.

He turned the weapon toward the camera.

“You were supposed to leave Sentinel to me.”

Everett’s expression remained cold.

“Sentinel requires discipline. You poured whiskey over a decorated veteran in front of five hundred witnesses.”

“You wanted to know whether she would activate.”

“And now I know.”

The screen shifted to Mara.

“Accept control, and I release the relocated veterans.”

Mara answered immediately.

“No.”

Grant looked at her as though refusal were incomprehensible.

“You can own everything he denied me.”

“I do not want an empire built from stolen identities.”

Everett smiled faintly.

“That is why you are qualified.”

The trap tightened.

Refusing power became the trait Everett used to justify giving it to her.

Celeste moved toward the console while Grant focused on the screen.

She removed the second chip from the necklace chain and inserted it into the server.

The Emerald Ledger began uploading to multiple independent investigators.

Grant saw the progress bar.

He struck Celeste across the face and pulled the chip free.

Nolan moved between them.

Grant pointed the pistol toward him.

Celeste screamed her brother’s name.

Mara raised one hand.

“Grant, your father is watching whether you shoot another veteran.”

The words stopped him.

Everett was no longer a father in Grant’s mind.

He was an evaluator.

Grant lowered the weapon slightly.

Marcus’s agents moved.

Then every exterior door opened.

A helicopter landed in the factory courtyard.

Everett Halstead stepped out alive, wearing a dark military coat and carrying a sealed leather case.

Beside him walked Captain Zoe Bennett.

She wore a federal inspector’s badge.

Grant stared at his supposedly dead father and Mara’s supposedly imprisoned commander.

Everett entered the laboratory.

“You have all misunderstood who was conducting the investigation.”

Zoe looked directly at Mara.

May you like

“The gala warrants were only the first phase.”

👉 Everett arrived with Zoe at his side, revealing that Mara’s former commander may have been his partner rather than his prisoner.
