Chapter 10 - MARTIN’S SEALED ACCOUNT
Martin surrendered every remaining device and account voluntarily.
Detective Bell discovered he had accessed the primary evidence vault three weeks before Henry’s death.
He denied altering the files.
“Henry asked me to test the release sequence.”
“Was Vivian present?” Bell asked.
“No.”
“Did she know?”
“I don’t know.”
Clara looked at him.
“That answer is becoming a shield.”
“Yes.”
Martin disclosed one secret account that had not appeared in the trust audit. Henry funded it with twelve million dollars.
Its stated purpose was Witness Continuity.
Martin used the money to relocate inspectors, tenants, and medical workers endangered by the Blackwood network.
Most payments were documented.
One was not.
Three million dollars went to a person identified only as V.A.
“Vivian?” Clara asked.
“I believed so.”
“When?”
“Four months after Henry died.”
“Why?”
“She requested emergency relocation.”
“Did you meet her?”
“No.”
Martin had transferred millions to a hidden person based on an encrypted message and an authentication phrase known only to Henry and Vivian.
The funds later appeared inside Hawthorne.
Martin may have unknowingly financed the company’s recent crimes.
Or he had knowingly helped Vivian.
Clara requested the authentication phrase.
Martin hesitated.
“Never let fire choose the survivor.”
The same phrase appeared in Henry’s letter about Mercer Street.
Anyone who possessed the archive could have used it.
Martin’s protected account also paid Judge Sloan’s former investigator and Ruth Delgado’s housing costs. Those payments explained why Julian accused the judge of bias.
Martin had supported witnesses privately because public channels were compromised.
Again, protection and secrecy had become inseparable.
The primary vault’s integrity report showed one altered file.
Martin’s credentials had opened it.
The file was titled:
EASTERN EXIT—ORIGINAL CAMERA.
The modification date was three weeks before Henry’s death.
Martin admitted he viewed the footage.
“Why hide that?”
“Because it showed Michael chaining the door.”
His brother’s guilt was undeniable.
The video also showed Eleanor giving the order.
Martin removed the footage from the automatic release because he feared Michael would be killed before he could testify.
Michael later became Kline and continued serving Eleanor.
Martin’s protection saved his brother.
It also concealed the strongest evidence against Eleanor for two decades.
Clara’s voice tightened.
“You protected the man who helped trap my mother inside a fire.”
“Yes.”
“You still expected me to trust you with the properties.”
“I expected you to judge me after seeing everything.”
“You prevented me from seeing everything.”
Martin lowered his head.
“Yes.”
He restored the original footage and surrendered it to the court.
The admission could destroy his legal career and expose him to obstruction charges.
It did not undo the concealment.
It did make Vivian’s warning truthful.
Martin had changed the vault.
Judge Hart ordered him removed as acting trust protector.
Clara became temporary sole representative under independent supervision.
For the first time, no father, husband, mother, or attorney stood between her and the trust.
The responsibility felt heavier than freedom.
Julian’s company entered formal default that afternoon. Without Clara’s properties, creditors demanded payment he could not make.
Eleanor responded by filing a civil claim that Henry had obtained the buildings through fraud.
She asserted Hawthorne—not Clara—was the rightful owner of the evidence properties.
The filing included a sworn declaration from Vivian Arden.
Clara stared at her mother’s signature.
Vivian claimed Henry created the preservation trust without her consent and used Clara as a public beneficiary while Vivian secretly controlled Hawthorne.
If genuine, the woman hiding for twenty-two years was now attempting to take the properties from her daughter.
A video accompanied the declaration.
Vivian appeared seated inside a dark office.
Her face carried burn scars along one side, but Clara recognized her instantly.
“Clara,” she said, “do not believe Julian, Eleanor, or Martin.”
She paused.
“And do not believe that I remained hidden to protect only you.”
The video ended before she explained.
The metadata showed it had been recorded beneath the courthouse.
