Chapter 13 - ELENA ARDEN
Vivian returned before investigators left the rehabilitation center.
She emerged from a hidden therapy corridor with her hands raised.
“I needed to retrieve Elena’s file before Eleanor’s people found it.”
Clara did not move toward her.
“Who is she?”
“My first daughter.”
Vivian gave birth to Elena at twenty-four, before she married Henry. The father was a city investigator named David Cross, who was gathering evidence against Blackwood Municipal Services.
David disappeared three weeks after Elena’s birth.
The baby vanished from the hospital nursery shortly afterward.
Vivian spent years searching.
She later married Henry, had Clara, and built a new life without revealing the first child’s existence.
“Did Dad know?”
“Yes.”
“Did Martin?”
“No.”
Martin looked genuinely shocked.
The Mercer Street investigation began because Vivian believed Eleanor’s company had used the same medical and municipal network that took Elena.
The fire was an attempt to destroy the records Vivian collected.
Henry purchased the seven properties because each one connected to a possible transfer point used by the network.
The trust was built to preserve evidence until Elena could be found.
Clara’s inheritance was part family protection, part search mechanism.
“What does Elena have to do with Julian?” Clara asked.
Vivian opened the birth file.
Elena had a small crescent-shaped mark beneath her right ear. A private agency located a woman with the same marker twenty years later.
Name:
Eleanor Blackwood.
Clara stared.
“That makes no sense.”
Eleanor was older than Vivian.
“She was not Elena,” Vivian said. “She raised her.”
After Elena’s disappearance, the baby entered a private adoption network controlled by Eleanor’s family. The child was given another identity and raised as Eleanor’s younger cousin.
She later became a lawyer.
Her current name was Victoria Allen.

The hidden owner connected to Hawthorne.
Elena Arden controlled the survivor trust.
Vivian had not been running Hawthorne alone.
Her missing daughter had returned as its trustee.
“Where is she?” Clara asked.
“I don’t know.”
Vivian had communicated with Elena through encrypted channels but met her only twice. Elena refused family reunion. She believed Vivian and Henry had used the search for her to justify decades of surveillance and manipulation.
Elena wanted control of Hawthorne to dismantle both Blackwood and Arden power.
Instead, she began using the company’s coercive tools.
Another victim became another architect.
The voice on the kitchen call may not have been Vivian.
Mother and daughter sounded similar enough for software comparison to confuse them.
Eleanor may have been answering to Elena.
Julian claimed Vivian watched the wedding, but the woman behind the mirrored wall could have been Clara’s sister.
Vivian had allowed the confusion because it protected Elena’s identity.
Clara felt anger sharpen.
“You used my belief that you were dead to protect a daughter I didn’t know existed.”
“Yes.”
“You placed both daughters inside separate lies.”
“Yes.”
Vivian no longer offered the language of necessity.
The surviving ledger identified Victoria Allen’s current legal office.
It was located on the forty-second floor of Hawthorne Tower.
Federal agents entered.
The office was empty.
A wall displayed photographs of Clara from childhood through the courtroom hearing.
Elena had watched her younger sister for decades.
One photograph showed Clara asleep in the hospital after the attack.
Someone had entered the protected room and stood beside her bed.
The visitor wore a dark coat and pearl earrings.
A letter rested beneath the photograph.
CLARA, I DID NOT ORDER THE OIL. I ORDERED THE TRUST OPENED BECAUSE OUR FATHER HID THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT ME.
Henry was not Elena’s biological father, yet she called him father.
He may have helped recover her secretly.
The letter continued:
ASK MARTIN WHY HE NOTARIZED MY RETURN AND THEN ERASED IT.
Martin closed his eyes.
Years earlier, a young woman approached his office with proof she was Vivian’s missing daughter. Henry instructed Martin to create a sealed identity trust.
Martin obeyed.
Then Henry ordered every record hidden from Vivian and Clara.
“Why?” Clara asked.
Martin looked toward Vivian.
“Henry believed Elena had already begun working with Eleanor.”
Vivian had never known her husband found their missing daughter first.
The family search had continued after the child was recovered because Henry did not trust the person she had become.
Before Clara could process it, the tower’s security alarm activated.
Elena’s office computer began transmitting Hawthorne’s entire archive.
