Mason remembered Samuel once referring to “the son who stayed at sea,” but Margaret quickly changed the subject.
Military records showed Jonathan Carter served in naval intelligence. He disappeared during a classified operation thirty-nine years earlier.
No body was recovered.
Admiral Vale served in the same unit.
The officer beside Samuel was likely Jonathan.
If alive, Evelyn’s uncle had helped create the legal structure around Carter Farm and the evidence beneath it.
Marcus reopened the restricted fingerprint result from Rourke’s challenge coin.
The partial match belonged to Jonathan Carter.
A man declared dead nearly four decades earlier had handled Rourke’s coin within the previous month.
Robert finally admitted that Jonathan visited the farm secretly for years.
“Why conceal him?” Evelyn asked.
“Because he was investigating Vale.”
“Did you help?”
“At first.”
Robert and Jonathan discovered that their father’s farmland had become part of a covert waste route. Jonathan wanted to expose it immediately.
Robert accepted money to delay him.
Samuel disinherited Robert after learning the truth.
That was why the original will excluded Evelyn’s parents entirely.
“Jonathan caused Mason’s disappearance?” Margaret asked bitterly.
Robert looked toward his son.
“No. I did.”
He said it plainly for the first time.
“I tied the rope. I pushed you from the boat. I believed you had given Jonathan the photographs.”
Mason’s face became expressionless.
“You tried to kill me for evidence I didn’t have.”
“Yes.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
For twenty-three years, she had called the river incident a panic, a mistake, or a family crisis.
Robert had known exactly what he was doing.
“Why did you stop looking for Mason?” Evelyn asked.
“Jonathan contacted me. He said Mason would remain alive if I stayed silent.”
“You let us mourn him.”
“I was afraid Jonathan would release everything.”
Robert had not been protecting the family.
He had been protecting himself from his brother.
Jonathan later helped Rourke investigate Grayhaven. When Rourke disappeared, Jonathan continued using his legal share in the farm to block the sale.
Admiral Vale began copying Rourke’s voice to manipulate Margaret.
The recent fingerprints suggested Jonathan returned to Virginia to recover the challenge coin and other evidence.
“Where is he?” Marcus asked.
Robert looked toward the farmhouse window.
“He uses the old railway tunnel beneath the western field.”
Environmental teams entered the tunnel.
They found food, encrypted radios, military uniforms, and photographs tracking every member of the Carter family.
One wall displayed Evelyn’s deployment schedule from the past twelve years.
Jonathan had watched her career from a distance.
Another wall showed Judge Simmons, Dana Holt, David Simmons, Robert, Margaret, Marcus, and Mason.
Jonathan had monitored the entire court case before anyone knew he existed.
On the table rested a current photograph of Evelyn entering the courtroom in uniform.
The image had been taken that morning from inside the public gallery.
Jonathan had been in court.
