Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN IN THE PUBLIC GALLERYMarcus reviewed every courthouse camera from the morning hearing.

Jonathan never appeared clearly.
But one woman entered immediately before Evelyn and sat near the secured side entrance. She wore a dark coat, carried no bag, and left when Mason stepped into court.
Margaret recognized her.
“Clara.”
Mason stood.
“My daughter?”
Clara Carter was twenty-six.
Mason believed she remained safe under a protected identity in Colorado. He had not spoken to her in nearly a year because witness-security rules restricted contact during the investigation.
The woman in the gallery was Clara.
She had joined Grayhaven’s legal department under an alias six months earlier.
Her purpose was to learn who authorized the farmhouse sale.
She followed David Simmons’s files into the courthouse and copied the hidden transfer order before anyone could erase it.
Margaret’s terror when Marcus entered did not come only from seeing Mason.
She saw Clara behind him.
Years earlier, Margaret visited Mason’s protected residence while pretending to deliver a message from Evelyn. She attempted to persuade him to sign away the farm.
Clara recorded the conversation as a teenager.
The audio preserved Margaret saying:
“If you remain legally dead, Robert can keep everyone safe.”
Mason stared at his mother.
“You found me.”
“Once.”
“You looked at my daughter and still went home without telling Evelyn.”
Margaret could not answer.
Clara entered the temporary courtroom under federal protection.
She carried Grayhaven’s internal server copy.
The records showed David Simmons handled the legal filings, but Admiral Vale directed the operation through an executive called J.C.
Jonathan Carter.
Evelyn’s uncle was not merely investigating Grayhaven.
He was helping manage it.
Clara displayed messages between Jonathan and Vale.
Jonathan repeatedly demanded that the farm be preserved until victims received compensation.
Vale demanded immediate demolition.
Their alliance had fractured.
The forged court transfer was Vale’s move.
The hidden railway tunnel was Jonathan’s counteroperation.
“Which one used Rourke’s voice?” Evelyn asked.
“Both,” Clara replied.
Jonathan had access to old recordings. Vale had military voice-modeling software. Each sent Margaret conflicting instructions while pretending to be Rourke.
The family had obeyed a dead man speaking from two opposing conspiracies.
Clara recovered one final message sent after Evelyn entered court:
The uniform confirms she has opened the deployment file. Begin farmhouse containment.
A live feed appeared from Carter Farm.
Smoke poured from the upper windows.
Someone had entered after investigators left and set the archive room on fire.
Another camera showed Robert’s truck near the barn.
Robert was supposed to be under guard.
He had disappeared during a medical transfer after claiming chest pain.
Evelyn ran for the exit.
Marcus stopped her.
“You are injured.”
“It is my property.”
“It is an active crime scene.”
“My grandfather’s evidence is inside.”
Mason took her arm.
“So is Dad.”
Evelyn looked at him.
Robert had tried to kill Mason and steal everything from both children.
Yet Mason was already moving toward the door.
Clara handed Evelyn the Grayhaven access code.
“Jonathan is inside too.”
The farm camera caught a man in a Navy coat dragging Robert through the burning kitchen.
His face turned toward the lens.
He looked enough like Captain Rourke to fool any stranger.
But Evelyn saw Samuel’s eyes.

Her uncle had finally stepped into view.
👉 The farmhouse was burning with Robert and Jonathan inside, forcing Evelyn to confront both the father who betrayed her and the uncle who controlled the conspiracy.
