PART 6
Skylar did not leave after seeing the maps.
She called her attorney from the gravel driveway.
Loudly.
So Ava could hear every word.
“She’s unstable.”
“She just came back from deployment.”
“She’s confused.”
“She may be hiding assets from the estate.”
Ava stood on the porch and listened without expression.
Hank’s jaw tightened.
“You want me to shut that down?”
Ava shook her head.
“Let her talk.”
Skylar paced beside the SUV.
The lake wind pulled at her hair.
She looked angrier with every sentence.
Then she said something that made Ava go still.
“Dad was not competent when he changed anything.”
Ava turned toward Hank.
He heard it too.
His face darkened.
Skylar ended the call and came back to the porch with new confidence.
“My attorney says I can contest anything signed while Dad was sick.”
Ava looked at her.
“You mean the deeds?”
Skylar smiled.
“So you admit there are deeds.”
Ava almost admired the trap.
Almost.
Before she could answer, Hank took one step forward.
“Your father started buying this land six years ago.”
Skylar blinked.
“What?”
“Long before he got sick.”
“That’s not true.”
Hank pulled a folder from under his arm.
“I drove him to the first closing.”
Ava looked at him sharply.
He had not shown her that folder yet.
Hank met her eyes.
“There is more.”
Skylar looked between them.
Her anger shifted into fear.
Hank opened the folder and removed copies of dated purchase agreements.
Six years.
Five years.
Four years.
Three years.
All naming Ava as grantee.
All signed when William Monroe was healthy, sharp, and very much aware of what he was doing.
Skylar grabbed for one.
Hank lifted it out of reach.
“No.”
“You can request copies through counsel.”
Skylar’s face twisted.
“You old liar.”
Ava stepped between them.
“Do not talk to him like that.”
Skylar stared at her.
“You think a uniform makes you strong?”
Ava’s voice was quiet.
“No.”
“It taught me not to panic when someone starts firing wild.”
Skylar’s eyes flashed.
Then she said the thing she had been saving.
“Dad regretted giving you anything.”
Ava’s face went still.
Skylar smiled.
“He told me.”
Hank’s voice came like thunder.
May you like
“No, he didn’t.”
