Hank had recorded William because William asked him to.
Not secretly.
Not dramatically.
Legally.
The recording was made in Patricia Wells’s office nine months before his death.
William’s voice came through Hank’s phone speaker inside the cabin while Skylar stood on the porch with her arms crossed.
At first, Ava could not breathe.
Her father’s voice sounded weaker than she remembered.
But still him.
Dry.
Certain.
A little amused.
“This statement is for my daughters.”
Ava sat down.
Skylar remained standing.
William continued.
“Skylar, you will say I was confused.”
Skylar’s face went white.
“You will say your sister abandoned me.”
“You will say service is absence because you have always confused proximity with loyalty.”
Ava pressed one hand over her mouth.
Hank lowered his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Ava called when she could.”
“She sent money I did not need because she worried anyway.”
“She asked about my pain when everyone else asked about my property.”
“She listened even from across the world.”
Skylar whispered, “Turn it off.”
Hank did not.
William’s voice grew softer.
“I love you both.”
“But love is not the same as trust.”
“I trusted Ava with the land because she understands duty.”
“I left Skylar the house because she understands possession.”
The words landed hard.
Skylar looked wounded.
Ava did too.
Truth can hurt the innocent and guilty at the same time.
William coughed in the recording.
Then continued.
“If Skylar contests this, play her the part where I say this clearly.”
“No one manipulated me.”
“No one tricked me.”
“No one stole from her.”
“I chose.”
The recording ended.
The cabin was silent except for the fire.
Skylar’s eyes were wet now.
But Ava knew her sister’s tears too well.
Some tears were grief.
Some were rage leaking.
Skylar pointed at the phone.
“He made me sound horrible.”
Ava looked at her.
“No.”
“He described you.”
Skylar flinched.
Then turned cruel again because cruelty was safer than shame.
“So what?”
“You get to play mountain queen now?”
Ava looked at the deeds.
Then at the lake.
Then at her father’s photo.
“No.”
“I get to protect what he built.”
Skylar laughed bitterly.
“You don’t even know what he built.”
Hank answered before Ava could.
