Chapter 8 - The Protector’s GameElise refused to choose.

Claire did not.

“I am the eldest,” she said toward the live feed. “File the acknowledgment.”

Elise turned sharply.

“You’re accepting her rules.”

“I am stating a fact.”

“A fact created by documents she controls.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“You have lived under our mother’s name your entire life.”

“And you think money will return what you lost.”

“I think pretending inheritance doesn’t matter is easy when everyone already believes you belong.”

The fight played directly into Eleanor Voss’s design.

The elderly woman watched with satisfaction.

Rebecca stepped between the sisters and the camera.

“This transmission is being traced.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Robert Ward said the same thing.”

Arthur Bell stood behind her with his hands at his sides. He did not appear restrained, but fear showed in his face.

Elise addressed him.

“Did you add the death file?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Eleanor would use it?”

“I thought she would lead us to Lydia.”

“You trusted her?”

“I trusted Margaret.”

Another protector hiding behind trust.

Julian moved closer to the screen.

“Dad?”

Martin was allowed into the courtroom under guard.

He stared at the boy.

“I’m here.”

Julian looked toward Eleanor.

“You said he didn’t want me.”

Martin’s face collapsed.

“I didn’t know you existed.”

The pattern repeated with almost mechanical cruelty.

Hidden child.

Manufactured abandonment.

Inheritance leverage.

Eleanor believed family bonds were strongest when people had to prove them through obedience.

She offered terms.

Elise would withdraw the estate case.

Claire would accept half of the public estate but abandon Whitmore Meridian.

Charles would remain temporary administrator.

In exchange, Lydia and Julian would be released.

Rebecca rejected the proposal.

Eleanor addressed Elise.

“Your mother has lived because I prevented all three of you from controlling her.”

“Charles imprisoned her.”

“Then Robert hid her.”

“And you?”

“I protected her from becoming evidence.”

“You made her children suffer to prove a theory.”

“I studied what each of you chose under pressure.”

Elise felt rage sharpen into clarity.

“You are not a protector. You are an experimenter.”

The live feed ended.

Investigators traced it to three possible locations.

One was a Voss estate in Pennsylvania.

One was an abandoned court retreat in Maryland.

The third was a private wing beneath Whitmore Memorial Hospital.

Charles’s family donated the hospital decades earlier.

Judge Ward ordered simultaneous searches.

The Pennsylvania estate was empty.

The Maryland retreat contained old recording equipment.

The hospital wing was active.

Agents found Arthur Bell in a locked office.

Julian was not there.

Neither was Eleanor.

Arthur revealed the feed had been prerecorded except for a short live section.

Eleanor remained elsewhere.

He had cooperated because Margaret promised Lydia would be released.

Margaret was not merely a nurse.

She was Lydia’s closest friend.

Together, they built the evidence archive.

But Margaret also believed Lydia’s daughters were dangerous to one another.

“She thinks one of you caused Lydia’s second disappearance,” Arthur said.

Elise looked toward Claire.

Claire’s face changed.

“What second disappearance?”

After Robert Ward died, Lydia prepared to contact Elise.

The night before, someone entered Blackthorn House and removed her.

Security records showed Claire’s credential.

Claire denied it.

“I was in London.”

Travel records confirmed she boarded a flight that evening, but the time left a three-hour gap.

“Did you go to Blackthorn first?” Elise asked.

Claire looked away.

“Yes.”

Rebecca stood.

“What happened?”

Claire visited Lydia to demand filing of the acknowledgment papers.

They argued.

Lydia refused.

Claire left her alive.

Hours later, Margaret reported Lydia missing.

Claire hid the visit because it made her look guilty.

Again, secrecy became evidence against the person using it.

Arthur produced a voice message Lydia sent after Claire left.

“I cannot choose between them. If the trust requires one daughter to be made less real, then the trust must be destroyed.”

Lydia planned to dissolve Whitmore Meridian.

Eleanor could not allow that.

The protector may have taken her to preserve the institution.

Judge Ward received a call from one of the search teams.

A hidden medical transport departed the hospital five minutes earlier.

It carried one female patient registered under the name Lydia Lane.

Destination:

The federal courthouse.

Everyone looked toward the doors.

A stretcher entered the hallway outside.

Elise stood.

Claire moved beside her.

The woman under the blanket lifted one weak hand.

Both daughters recognized Lydia’s wedding ring.

Their mother had finally arrived.

Then the medic pushing the stretcher locked the courtroom doors from inside.

Margaret Voss removed her surgical mask.

“This reunion will happen under my terms.”

👉 Lydia reached the courthouse alive, but Margaret Voss sealed the room and revealed she—not Eleanor—had been controlling the final stage of the protector’s plan.
