Chapter 8 - The Man Wearing Julian’s ShoesThe location of Margaret’s transmission was traced to an abandoned Christmas-tree farm in northern Vermont.

Police found blood, a shattered camera, and tire tracks.
No body.
No Margaret.
The polished shoe remained near the feed equipment.
It was Julian’s size and brand.
Inside the heel, investigators found a Vale family tracking chip registered to Julian’s estate account.
Julian had ordered twelve pairs over six years.
One pair disappeared from his closet the week before Christmas.
Estate footage showed a man entering Julian’s wing after midnight.
Same height.
Same build.
Face hidden by a hood.
He used Marcus’s security code.
Marcus denied providing it.
The camera gap had been created with Elise’s tablet.
All three siblings’ credentials appeared in one intrusion.
Again, someone combined their separate access into a larger act.
Clara Holt examined the shoe.
The leather carried residue from theatrical adhesive.
Someone had applied a prosthetic sole to change the wearer’s gait.
The man on Margaret’s final video wanted to resemble Julian, but not perfectly.
A deliberate clue.
Catherine’s network relied on confusion more than invisibility.
Lena searched companies connected to estate mediation and private theater work.
Helena Moore’s foundation paid a special-effects consultant named Adrian Cross.
Adrian was forty-two, similar in build to Julian, and formerly worked as a stunt performer.
He had undergone facial reconstruction after an accident.
His current photograph was unavailable.
Helena claimed she hired him for security simulations, not impersonation.
Abigail’s files told another story.
A document labeled Sibling Contingency described a substitute for each Vale child if identity disputes threatened the trust.
Richard’s father had created the program after Helena’s removal.
A substitute Julian.
A substitute Elise.
A substitute Marcus.
People trained to sign documents, appear on cameras, and create plausible legal uncertainty.
Catherine inherited the files.
Richard felt physically ill.
His father had prepared replacement children as if heirs were executive positions.
“Were they actually related?” Richard asked.
“Some,” Abigail said. “Some were children from Vale employees.”
The substitute Julian was Adrian Vale Cross.
His mother had been a Vale housekeeper. His father was unknown.
Catherine raised him within her security network.
Adrian may have attacked Margaret.
Or she may have staged the scene with him.
The family no longer knew whether the blood on the floor belonged to her.
Clara Holt checked the five birth objects for the master key.
Julian’s ring contained no hidden system.
Elise’s pendant held a storage chip with old trust maps.
Marcus’s watch contained an emergency radio.
Helena’s hospital bracelet carried an encrypted code.
Clara’s medallion held a tiny physical key.
All five objects contained something.
Margaret had distributed the Christmas vote across them.
Together, they formed a multi-part access system.
Catherine needed every child assembled.
The hospital meeting had provided digital scans of all five objects.
Helena had placed hers on the table.
Julian and Elise wore theirs.
Marcus’s watch was stored in evidence.
Clara’s medallion remained around her neck.
Someone inside the hospital scanned them remotely.
Catherine may already possess the full key.
The Christmas vote could be rewritten at any moment.
Graham moved to shut down the trust servers.
The system rejected him.
A message appeared:
New fiduciary recognized.
Name: Adrian Vale.
The substitute Julian had been installed as trustee.
How?
A valid paternity record connected him to Richard.
Richard stared at the document.
Adrian Cross was his biological son.
“No,” Richard whispered.
Margaret’s journals revealed a fertility procedure performed during one of Richard’s business trips nearly forty-three years earlier. A clinic collected his genetic material under the pretense of testing.
Richard never consented to reproduction.
His father used the sample to create a backup male heir.
Adrian was not merely an actor.
He was Richard’s biological child, born months before Julian.
If legally recognized, Adrian could become the eldest son.
Helena remained the eldest child overall.
The trust hierarchy now included six descendants connected to Richard or Margaret.
Catherine had created another beneficiary.
Richard remembered the note in the silver gift.
From the child you still haven’t found.
Adrian had entered the estate, cut the emergency cord, and left the medication.
He may have helped save Richard after helping create the attack.
Contradiction defined every child in the family.
Lena located Adrian through the tracking chip.
He stood outside the hospital.
Alone.
Wearing a dark overcoat and no polished shoes.
He surrendered without resistance.
Richard agreed to meet him through glass.
Adrian’s face resembled Julian’s more closely than Richard expected.
“What did you do to Margaret?” Richard asked.
“Helped her disappear.”
“Was the blood hers?”
“No.”
“Whose?”
“Mine.”
Adrian showed a bandaged hand.
“Why frame Julian?”
“To make Catherine believe I completed her order.”
“Whose side are you on?”
Adrian smiled faintly.
“Mother asked the same thing.”
“Catherine?”
“No.”
He looked directly at Richard.
“Margaret.”
Richard felt the family structure shift again.
Margaret had known Adrian too.
Perhaps she helped raise him.
Adrian continued.
“She needed you to believe Catherine held the key while we moved the vote.”
“Where is Margaret?”
“Safe for now.”
“Take me to her.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because she isn’t hiding from Catherine anymore.”
“Who is she hiding from?”
Adrian looked toward Graham Holt through the observation glass.
“The trustee who helped Richard’s father create me.”
Graham stepped backward.
Richard stared at his oldest friend.
Graham had denied knowing the program.
Adrian placed a folder against the glass.
Inside was a fertility consent form.

The authorization bore Graham’s signature.
👉 Adrian emerged as Richard’s secret biological son and Margaret’s ally, while evidence accused trusted chairman Graham Holt of helping create replacement heirs decades earlier.
