Chapter 23 - The house

Laura sold the house twenty months after the cage.

Not because it was haunted.

Not because courts seized it.

She hated living there.

The pool needed major repair.

The backyard reminded Emily of too much.

Financially, sale also helped her stabilize after legal fees and fraud-related losses.

The dog cages were removed before listing.

By a contractor.

Not me with a sledgehammer.

I had briefly imagined doing it.

Then realized metal did not need punishment.

The blue tarp went into ordinary trash.

The shed was repaired.

The pool drained and professionally cleaned.

Listing photographs showed bright blue water.

Fresh sod.

No evidence of what happened.

That bothered me for one afternoon.

Then stopped.

A house does not owe the public a memorial.

Legal records existed.

Emily’s memory existed.

That was enough.
