Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY BLACK CAR

Vivian refused to become bait.

Rachel agreed that returning to the mansion before Nolan’s capture would be too dangerous. Security doubled around the hospital and Vivian’s temporary residence.

The duplicate black car still created a serious problem.

Nolan could use it to produce false traffic footage, stage an accident, or plant evidence miles from Vivian’s actual location.

Police impounded it.

Forensic technicians found traces of the concentrated pink medicine in the rear cup holder.

Nolan had practiced placing the bottle where cameras could see it.

He intended to show Vivian transporting the drug herself.

The duplicate handbag contained forged pharmacy receipts and a handwritten dosing schedule in Vivian’s imitated writing.

The first-aid kit held unused syringes.

Every object built the same lie:

Vivian had drugged Sabina over several days.

Thatcher’s planted bottle would support it.

The altered thermometer would suggest concealment.

The public argument at the mansion gate would become the moment Vivian fled after being challenged.

Nolan’s version had been almost complete.

Only the hidden mansion archive, black car backup, and hospital toxicology broke it apart.

Grace asked why Nolan continued after Beatrix and Thatcher were arrested.

“He can no longer obtain the estate through the loan,” she said.

Rachel examined the property-sale agreement.

“Nolan personally guaranteed part of the buyer’s financing. If the sale fails, he loses millions and may face fraud claims from the investors.”

He was not merely protecting clients.

He was protecting himself.

The formal dinner guests began cooperating. Most claimed ignorance, but two admitted Nolan told them Vivian might resist because she was emotionally attached to the mansion.

He described her ownership as an obstacle to rational development.

One investor remembered Nolan receiving a call during dinner.

“He said the child was not sleeping.”

“What did he do?” Rachel asked.

“He told someone to increase the dose slightly.”

The investor assumed they were discussing a nanny.

That statement placed Nolan directly inside the medication decision.

A warrant expanded from fraud and obstruction to child endangerment and conspiracy.

Sabina was discharged under police protection.

Vivian dressed her in a warm coat and wrapped the pink blanket around her shoulders. They left through a private hospital entrance and entered an unmarked vehicle rather than the black car.

Before departing, Dr. Price crouched beside Sabina.

“What do you do if your chest hurts again?”

“Tell Mom.”

“And if another adult tells you to keep medicine secret?”

“Tell Mom and a doctor.”

Dr. Price smiled.

“Exactly.”

Vivian thanked the medical team, then drove with Rachel toward the temporary house.

For the first time in days, Sabina slept naturally.

No sedative.

No hidden fever.

No one listening outside the door.

When they arrived, Martin waited with two suitcases and a folder of restored estate documents.

“I found something inside the mansion’s original gate-control system,” he said.

Nolan had created a permanent master credential years earlier while serving as estate attorney. It bypassed ordinary code changes and ownership revocations.

Martin attempted to delete it.

The system required a physical hardware key.

That key had been stored in Beatrix’s handbag before her arrest.

Police inventory showed no key.

The handbag had been photographed at the hospital and later sealed in evidence.

During transfer to the county facility, one interior pocket had been cut open.

Someone removed the hardware key without breaking the outer seal.

Rachel immediately called the evidence unit.

A technician confirmed the security tag had been copied and replaced.

Nolan had an accomplice with access to police evidence.

At that moment, Martin’s phone displayed an estate alert.

The supposedly deleted master credential had just opened the mansion’s service gate.

👉 Nolan—or someone carrying his key—had entered the locked estate while Vivian and Sabina were still on the road.
