Chapter 1

Husband Gives His Wife Bus Fare Five Days After Her C Section—Then She Calls the Father He Never Should Have Underestimated.
Dominic Hale handed me bus fare outside the hospital while I was holding our five-day-old son.
Not cab fare.
Not an apology.
Not his arm.
Three folded bills pressed into my shaking hand as if I were a stranger inconveniencing him at the curb.
The black luxury SUV idled beside us with its rear passenger door open. His mother, Victoria, sat inside in a pale outfit, watching me through the doorway like I was delaying her appointment. His sister Natalie sat beside her, half amused, half bored, her handbag in her lap.
I stood in slippers on the hospital entrance pavement, still wearing a pink floral robe over my hospital gown.
My wristband was still on.
My incision burned every time I breathed too deeply.
Leo slept against my chest, wrapped in a white blanket, so tiny and warm that I was afraid even my grief might disturb him.
Dominic glanced at his watch.
“Take the bus. My mother is waiting.”
I looked at the money in my palm.
Then at him.
“I can barely stand, Dominic.”
He avoided my eyes and reached for the SUV door.
Victoria leaned forward from the back seat.
“Stop making everything about you.”
Something inside me broke cleanly.
Not loudly.
Cleanly.
Dominic began closing the door.
I did not beg again.
I held Leo closer, lifted the phone already pressed to my ear, and called the one person Dominic had always dismissed as “old money with no teeth.”
My father answered on the first ring.
“Dad,” I said, my voice shaking but certain. “I’m leaving him.”
Dominic froze with one hand on the SUV door.
Natalie’s smile disappeared.
Victoria turned sharply toward me.
My father’s voice came through, calm and absolute.
“Stay exactly where you are.”
At that same instant, Dominic’s phone began vibrating inside his suit pocket.
Then again.
Then again.
He pulled it out, read the screen, and his face tightened.
For the first time since we married, Dominic looked at me as if I had become dangerous.

He was right.
