My father had given me one instruction before my wedding.
Not advice.
An instruction.
“If you are ever in public with Dominic and he makes you feel unsafe, do not argue. Call me.”
I had rolled my eyes.
“Dad, that sounds dramatic.”
He did not smile.
“Control often waits until witnesses are inconvenient.”
I thought of that sentence outside the hospital.
Witnesses were everywhere.
Valets.
Nurses.
Security.
Drivers.
Patients.
People pretending not to look while clearly looking.
Dominic relied on that.
Public humiliation works because victims feel responsible for keeping everyone comfortable.
I had spent years keeping everyone comfortable.
Not that day.
I held Leo with one arm and pressed my phone to my ear with the other.
Dominic saw the contact name before the call connected.
His face changed.
“Audrey, don’t.”
That was the first honest thing he said.
Not please.
Not wait.
Don’t.
An order.
I ignored it.
My father answered.
“Dad… I’m leaving him.”
The silence that followed lasted less than a second, but it felt like a wall rising behind me.
“Stay exactly where you are.”
My knees weakened.
Not from fear this time.
From relief.
Dominic’s phone vibrated.
He looked annoyed until he read the first alert.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Victoria sat upright in the SUV.
“What is it?”
He did not answer.
Natalie leaned toward him.
“Dominic?”
His face had gone tight and bloodless.
The nurse quietly moved closer to me.
“Ma’am,” she said, “do you need to come back inside?”
Dominic snapped, “She’s fine.”
The nurse looked at him once.
Then at me.
“Ma’am?”
That mattered.
She asked me.
Not him.
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“Audrey.”
The nurse’s voice sharpened.
“Sir, step back.”
Victoria opened the SUV door wider.
“This is absurd. She is discharged.”
My father’s voice came through the phone.
“She is not leaving with them.”
Dominic heard it.
So did Victoria.
So did the nurse.
