Chapter 7 - the scratches behind the mattress
Claire was discharged five days later.
She and Ava moved into Natalie’s home under police protection. Marcus remained detained without bail after prosecutors presented the refrigerant system, forged proxy, sedatives, and life-insurance policy.
Grant remained missing.
Owen advised Claire not to return to the mansion.
She agreed until investigators asked her to identify personal items in the basement.
Then she insisted on going.
The cage remained in place, its door cut open and bent outward. Evidence markers covered the concrete floor.
Without Marcus standing nearby, the basement appeared smaller.
Claire could not understand how six days inside it had felt like an entire world.
Natalie stayed upstairs with Ava.
Owen walked beside Claire.
“You can stop at any time.”
“I know.”
She stepped inside the cage.
The metal floor still held faint scrape marks where she had dragged the water bottle toward the mattress. The loose panel had been removed, exposing the modified cooling line beneath it.
Claire looked toward the wall.
Investigators had stripped away the fresh gray paint.
Scratches covered the concrete.

November 14, 2022.
Three short vertical lines.
A gap.
Then four more.
A count of days.
Laura had spent at least seven days inside.
Below the initials, another message appeared.
G.S. has the key.
Grant Shaw.
Claire touched nothing.
“Did the cage have a key then?”
“The original design used a concealed lock,” Owen said. “Marcus later ordered Grant to weld it shut permanently.”
“Why?”
“Possibly because Laura escaped.”
Claire stared at the scratches.
“If Laura escaped, why didn’t she go to police?”
“She may have believed Grant controlled the evidence against her.”
Owen opened a sealed photograph of the utility-sink cavity.
Laura’s hidden camera had connected to a small storage device. The device was missing, but a serial number allowed police to trace its purchase.
Laura bought it under her own name a month before disappearing.
She expected danger.
She planned to document it.
Near the rear bar, Claire noticed a small metallic shape wedged between the floor and wall.
The evidence team had missed it because it matched the cage’s dull surface.
Owen stopped her before she reached down.
A technician removed the object.
It was a microSD card wrapped in foil.
The card contained fourteen short videos.
Laura had copied them from the hidden camera before escaping.
The first showed Grant inspecting the cage.
The second showed Marcus testing the exterior lock.
The third showed Laura being pushed inside.
Grant held her arms while Marcus closed the door.
Claire watched only after Owen warned her what the footage contained.
Laura remained composed at first.
“You cannot hide a compliance officer because she found fraudulent invoices.”
Marcus stood beyond the bars.
“You are not being hidden. You are being given time to reconsider your accusations.”
Grant placed documents through the opening.
“Sign the resignation and confession.”
“I did not steal anything.”
“Then explain why the audit files are on your laptop.”
“You placed them there.”
Grant smiled.
“Prove it.”
The later videos showed Laura growing weaker.
Marcus brought water.
Grant brought documents.
On the seventh night, Laura pretended to collapse. When Grant opened the original lock to check her pulse, she struck him with a metal cup and escaped through the service staircase.
The final video was recorded outside the cage.
Laura faced the hidden camera.
“I got out, but they have my passport, my accounts, and evidence made to look like I stole from the company. Grant says he will send it to federal investigators if I speak.”
She looked toward the stairs.
“I’m leaving this card where someone honest might find it.”
The recording ended in 2022.
The card remained hidden until Claire discovered it.
It did not explain the recent photographs beneath the floor.
Laura had returned, but she had not used the original camera because Grant removed it after her escape.
Someone else photographed the cage preparation three months earlier.
Owen checked the card’s file system.
One video had been deleted after the others were recorded.
Technicians restored part of it.
Laura stood in the basement with another woman whose face remained outside the frame.
The woman said:
“Marcus will do it again unless we make him believe the evidence is gone.”
Laura answered:
“Then let him build the cage.”
Claire felt cold.
Laura and the unknown woman had intentionally allowed Marcus to prepare another imprisonment while secretly documenting him.
“Did they know I would be the person inside?” Claire asked.
Owen did not answer until the restored audio continued.
The unknown woman said:
“Claire is already asking about the missing accounts.”
Laura whispered:
May you like
“Then we are running out of time.”
👉 Laura knew Claire was becoming Marcus’s next target, yet she allowed the trap to continue for reasons still hidden in the damaged recording.
