Chapter 9 - the trust created before ava was born
Laura’s live message lasted thirty seconds.
Then the feed disappeared.
Police searched Bennett Medical’s executive office and found no one. The camera had transmitted through an internal system before erasing itself.
Laura understood the company’s network better than Marcus.
Owen asked Claire whether Ava had a trust.
“My father’s estate created one for any future children.”
The trust automatically received a portion of Claire’s shares at birth. It was designed to protect family ownership if Claire died unexpectedly.
Before Ava was born, Claire was sole trustee.
After birth, the child’s other legal parent became temporary co-trustee unless Claire filed a written restriction.
Marcus knew that clause.
Claire had instructed Grant to prepare the restriction months earlier.
Grant claimed he completed it.
No restriction had been filed.
Marcus became co-trustee the moment Ava was born.
His criminal detention did not remove him automatically. A separate court order was required.
Miriam Cole, Claire’s family attorney, filed one immediately.
Marcus’s lawyer opposed it, arguing that allegations did not eliminate his parental rights.
The judge froze all trust transactions pending review.
Then the bank reported that a transfer instruction had been submitted twelve hours before Claire’s rescue.
It authorized the sale of Ava’s future shares if Claire became medically incapacitated.
The proceeds would enter a “family continuity account.”
Marcus and Grant controlled that account.
Claire had never approved the instruction.
The authorization used a voice recording.
Her own voice said:
I approve the continuity transfer for the protection of my child.
Claire remembered the sentence.
Marcus asked her to repeat it during what he called a rehearsal for the baby’s emergency medical plan.
He had separated the words from their original context and attached them to a financial transaction.
Owen found the complete recording on the mansion’s home system.
Marcus said:
“If labor begins while we’re driving, say this so the car assistant recognizes the emergency protocol.”
Claire repeated the line.
He transformed preparation for childbirth into consent to sell Ava’s inheritance.
The bank blocked the transfer because the trust freeze arrived first.
Marcus’s plan failed by less than three hours.
Laura sent another message through the hidden phone.
The continuity account pays Grant first. Marcus believes he controls it. He doesn’t.
Miriam traced the ownership.
The shell company behind the account belonged to Grant’s brother, who claimed he knew nothing about it.
Grant had designed the structure so that if Marcus gained control of Ava’s shares, most of the money passed through accounts Grant could empty.
Marcus and Grant planned to betray each other after betraying Claire.
Their alliance depended on shared crimes and competing greed.
Claire attended the trust hearing with Ava sleeping in a carrier beside her.
Marcus appeared by video from jail.
He described himself as a concerned father being excluded because of a marital misunderstanding.
The prosecutor played the basement recording.
Marcus’s voice:
If the baby survives and Claire doesn’t, I control everything.
The judge removed him as trustee and suspended all financial authority involving Ava.
An independent bank and Miriam became co-trustees.
Claire accepted the restriction on her own power too.
No parent would control Ava’s assets alone.
Afterward, Laura contacted Claire directly through an encrypted audio call.
Her voice sounded older than Claire remembered.
“Why didn’t you open the cage?” Claire asked.
Silence followed.
“I knew Owen was upstairs.”
“I was in labor.”
“I knew.”
“You chose the investigation over me.”
“Yes.”
The answer arrived without excuse.
Claire’s anger sharpened.
“You had no right.”
“No.”
“Then why are you helping now?”
“Because I made the same decision Marcus always made. I treated another person’s pain as a tool.”
Claire held Ava closer.
“Where are you?”
“Not safe enough to tell you.”
“Grant is in custody.”
“Grant is not the person I’m hiding from.”
“Marcus?”
“No.”
Laura’s reply disturbed Claire more than if she had named him.
She explained that the recent photographs beneath the floor had been taken by another Bennett Medical employee who helped her document the cage.
Laura refused to identify the person because company records had already been accessed after Marcus’s arrest.
Someone was still deleting files.
“Meet Owen,” Claire said. “Give him everything.”
“I will when I know which evidence room is safe.”
The call ended.
Owen received an alert from headquarters.
The original microSD card containing Laura’s videos had been removed from the secure evidence locker.
The access log listed Owen’s own identification number.
