Chapter 1

Husband Refuses to Claim His Newborn Daughter—Then the Hidden Callaway Partnership Changes Everything.
My husband refused to sign our daughter’s birth papers while I was still bleeding into hospital sheets.
Marlo was less than two hours old.
She slept against my chest in a white hospital blanket, one tiny bracelet around her wrist, her mouth opening and closing like she was still learning the world had air.
Weston stood beside my bed in his navy blazer and burgundy shirt, looking at our newborn daughter as if she were a failed contract.
Odette sat behind me in the visitor chair, my sister’s hands clenched so tightly her knuckles had gone white.
The nurse froze near the doorway.
Weston did not reach for Marlo.
Did not ask if she was healthy.
Did not ask if I was in pain.
He only looked at the papers on the bedside table and said, “I already have a son. I’m not signing anything for this baby.”
For one second, my heart did what it had done too many times in my marriage.
It tried to break quietly.
Then I looked down at Marlo.
Her little fist moved against my gown.
Something in me hardened into peace.
I tightened the blanket around her and lifted my eyes back to Weston.
“Then remember this moment.”
He smiled like I was powerless.
Like I was just an exhausted wife in a hospital bed.
Like he had not just rejected the child who carried his blood.
Then the door opened.
Josephine Nadeir entered in a charcoal pantsuit, holding a sealed legal envelope and moving with the calm of a woman who had waited years for the right sentence.
She stopped beside the brown legal folder on my bedside table.
Odette stood immediately and moved to my side.
Josephine opened the folder and looked at Weston.
“Sable inherited the controlling rights to Callaway Holdings.”
Weston stopped breathing.
“That company belongs to my family.”
Josephine closed the folder slowly.
“No, Weston. Your family has been managing what it never fully owned.”
I placed Marlo carefully into Odette’s arms.
Then I removed my wedding ring and set it on top of the legal folder.
My body ached from childbirth.
My voice did not.
“You rejected your daughter. Now your family answers to us.”
Weston stared at me like I had become a stranger.
He was wrong.
May you like
I had become myself.
