Chapter 8

The board meeting happened without me physically present.

I was recovering from childbirth.

Josephine attended by secure video from my hospital room.

Odette held Marlo so I could sit upright.

Weston sat in the conference room beside his father, pale and furious.

His mother was not allowed in.

That alone must have felt like war to her.

Josephine began with the original 1978 partnership agreement.

Then the transfer to my mother.

Then my mother’s will.

Then my inheritance.

Then the protective clause covering Nadeir-Callaway descendants.

Then Weston’s refusal to acknowledge Marlo.

Then the attempted exclusion planning documents naming Graham.

Then the spousal waiver Weston tried to make me sign before delivery.

The board members listened in growing silence.

Some looked shocked.

Some looked guilty.

The guilty ones had known pieces.

Not all.

Enough.

Weston tried to interrupt.

“This is personal.”

Josephine answered, “No.”

“This is governance.”

His father tried next.

“The Nadeir rights were dormant.”

“Dormant until breach.”

“There was no breach.”

Josephine played the hospital audio from the nurse’s official record.

Weston’s own voice filled the boardroom.

I already have a son. I’m not signing anything for this baby.

No one moved.

Then my voice.

Then remember this moment.

I saw Weston look down.

Not in shame.

In calculation.

Josephine spoke again.

“The controlling partner moves to suspend Weston Callaway from executive authority pending review.”

A board member asked, “On what grounds?”

I answered before Josephine could.

“Breach of fiduciary duty, attempted rights suppression, and documented intent to disinherit a protected heir before birth.”

The room turned toward the screen.

Maybe they had forgotten I was there.

Women in hospital gowns are often underestimated.

That day, I let them remember me.

The vote was not unanimous.

Power rarely releases itself politely.

But it passed.

Weston was suspended.

Charles was placed under investigation.

A temporary operating committee was formed under my controlling direction.

Josephine closed her folder.

“Callaway Holdings will comply with Nadeir governance review effective immediately.”

Weston stood so quickly his chair hit the wall.

“This is my name.”

I looked at him through the screen.

“No.”

“It is Marlo’s name too.”

May you like

“And unlike you, I intend to protect what comes with it.”
