Chapter 7
“Colin, is that your answer too?”
The room became completely still.
The younger children clutched their travel bags.
Patricia stared at her son with confidence.
She believed she had already made the decision for him.
Colin looked toward the fireplace.
Then the windows.
Then the floor.
Anywhere except at me.
I understood what he wanted.
He wanted me to leave voluntarily.
He wanted to tell himself later that no one expelled me.
That my injuries made temporary separation logical.
That Aiden became upset because I escalated the conversation.
He wanted every benefit of abandonment without accepting the word.
“Rachel,” he began, “you’re exhausted.”
“That was not my question.”
“Mom is trying to help.”
“That was not my question either.”
Patricia stepped forward.
Aiden moved with her.
I placed one hand against his chest and kept him back.
Colin rubbed the rear of his neck.
The gesture was familiar.
He used it when pretending a decision had arrived from circumstances rather than himself.
“Maybe some space is best.”
The sentence landed more quietly than Patricia’s insult.
It hurt more.
He had seen the bruises.
Sat beside my hospital bed.
Read the recovery instructions.
He knew I could not safely manage four children alone.
And still, when asked whether his injured wife and children should be removed, he chose the answer easiest for himself.
I reached into the folder.
The document was titled in bold letters, but no one needed to read them.
Patricia recognized the blue notarial seal.
Her expression changed.
“What is that?”
I placed it on the coffee table.
The pages spread beside the packed bags.
My phone vibrated.
Naomi’s vehicle had entered the driveway.
Colin looked at his signature.
Then at mine.
His face tightened as memory returned.
He had signed the agreement with his own lawyer present.
He could not claim surprise.
“Then you just activated the agreement.”
Patricia took one quick step toward the table.
Aiden blocked her again.
