Chapter 8
Naomi entered carrying a leather case.
Beside her walked David Cole, the trust’s independent administrator.
Patricia’s alarm deepened when she recognized him.
“What is he doing here?”
David did not answer her.
He looked at me.
“Rachel, are you requesting enforcement of the medical-incapacity protections?”
“Yes.”
Colin stepped away from the fireplace.
“Wait.”
It was the first decisive word he had spoken all afternoon.
Naomi placed a small recorder on the table.
“The conversation has already been preserved through Rachel’s phone and home security system.”
Patricia looked toward the ceiling camera.
She had forgotten it existed.
Colin stared at me.
“You recorded us?”
“I documented what happened in my home.”
“This is our home.”
David opened his case.
“The residence is held by the Reeves Children’s Property Trust. Rachel is the present controlling beneficiary.”
Patricia scoffed.
“Colin is her husband.”
“That grants no ownership interest.”
Colin’s face tightened.
He already knew.
The children did not.
I hated that they were hearing any of it.
I looked at Aiden.
“Take your brother and sisters into the kitchen.”
He shook his head.
“I’m staying.”
Naomi crouched slightly so she was closer to his eye level.
“You protected your mother. Now let the adults finish.”
After a moment, Aiden gathered the younger children and moved toward the doorway.
He kept watching me until they were out of sight.
David placed three envelopes beside the agreement.
One concerned residence access.
One concerned Colin’s management authority over trust-backed business financing.
The third initiated an independent audit of every transaction involving family assets.
No balances were announced.
No final divorce terms.
No custody decision.
Only temporary protections Colin had agreed to years earlier.
His face lost color.
“You cannot suspend company credit.”
David answered evenly.
“The trust can suspend its guarantees and administrative support pending review.”
“My projects depend on those.”
Naomi looked at him.
“Then you should not have treated your wife’s medical vulnerability as a path to controlling the trust.”
Patricia reached for Colin’s arm.
