Chapter 10 - THE SIGNATURE HE DEMANDED
The fourteen-second recording transformed the case.
Robert had not merely watched Amanda collapse.
He attempted to use her medical emergency as leverage.
The development agreement found inside the robe belt contained a smeared fingerprint near the signature line. The print belonged to Amanda, but no signature appeared.
Robert likely placed the paper before her while she struggled to remain conscious.
She refused.
The prosecutor argued that Robert’s intention became unmistakable at that moment.
He knew Amanda needed emergency care.
He withheld it to obtain money.
When she still would not sign, he allowed her condition to worsen.
Robert’s defense team changed strategy again.
They claimed the audio had been taken out of context.
Perhaps Robert meant Amanda should sign consent for medical treatment.
The document itself destroyed that explanation.
It was a property transfer.
Grace had prepared a duplicate copy before Amanda’s death. The terms matched exactly.
Robert’s attorney requested private negotiations.
He offered to admit poisoning Amanda accidentally, moving her body, and destroying evidence in exchange for a manslaughter plea.
The prosecutor rejected it.
The state intended to pursue murder.
Robert reacted by blaming Ben Walker, a former financial manager at Amanda’s company. He claimed Ben supplied the medication and suggested frightening Amanda to delay the audit.
Lena investigated.
Ben had reported Robert’s suspicious transfers to Amanda weeks earlier. He had no connection to the pharmacy purchase, the house, or the drug.
Robert selected him because he knew enough about the fraud to seem plausible.
The attempt failed quickly.
Still, it reminded investigators that Robert would accuse anyone if it created uncertainty.
Katie’s funeral accusation remained the cleanest moment in the case.
No technical analysis.
No expert interpretation.
She saw Robert wearing an object Amanda had hidden as evidence.
She asked a direct question.
Robert panicked.
His response led to everything else.
The postponed funeral was rescheduled after the medical examiner released Amanda’s body.
This time, no open coffin stood beside the aisle.
Katie chose a closed casket.
“I already said goodbye to her face,” she explained. “I don’t want Robert’s last day to stay inside the chapel.”
White flowers surrounded the coffin again.
The same relatives returned.
Robert attended only through the knowledge that two deputies remained outside the detention wing across town.
Grace sat beside Katie.
Claire sat on the other side.
No one wore the gold ring.
During the service, the minister spoke about Amanda’s work and love for her daughter. He did not reduce her life to the way she died.
Katie placed the children’s bracelet she had made for Amanda on top of the coffin.
Then she whispered:
“I listened.”
The burial proceeded.
No police interruption.
No hidden hand reaching for evidence.
Yet the ring remained sealed inside a laboratory case.
After the service, Lena told Grace that forensic technicians had discovered a thin layer of clear resin inside the band.
The resin concealed a second engraving.
At first, investigators believed the marks were decorative scratches.
Magnification revealed letters and numbers:
A-17.
Grace did not recognize the code.
Amanda’s bank locker used a different number.
Robert’s financial records contained no A-17 account.
Katie remembered her mother turning the ring under a lamp the night she hid it.
Amanda had not only kept it because it proved Robert came home.
She had been looking inside it.
“Did the ring belong to Robert before Mom married him?” Katie asked.
Grace did not know.
Photographs showed him wearing it for at least six years, including before meeting Amanda.
Robert claimed it was a family ring inherited from his father.
His father had never mentioned it in estate records.
Lena searched Robert’s office again.
Inside a locked drawer, officers found an old receipt from a private storage facility.
Unit A-17.
The rental had been paid in cash for seven years.
