Chapter 23 - THE WOMAN WITH AMANDA’S FACE
The visitor was not Amanda.
Facial comparison showed subtle differences around the ears, chin, and eyes. The woman wore professional makeup and a medical-grade facial overlay copied from Amanda’s public photographs.
Her real name was Elise Grant.
She had worked for Meridian Records before Marissa became director.
Elise left the detention center before officers understood the disguise. Evelyn claimed she believed Amanda had survived.
Lena did not believe her.
“You knew who entered.”
“I recognized the face.”
“That was the point.”
“You think I control every person who learned from me.”
“You arranged the visit.”
Evelyn requested an attorney.
Investigators searched Elise’s apartment.
The rooms were empty, but a wall safe contained Katie’s successor file.
The documents explained the disguise.
Evelyn had prepared “continuity representatives” for major account owners. If an owner died, disappeared, or refused cooperation, a trained representative could attend remote meetings, authorize transfers, and reassure employees long enough for the assets to move.
The representative did not need to live permanently as the person.
She needed to survive one video call.
One bank meeting.
One signature appointment.
Elise had practiced Amanda’s voice for six months.
Robert knew.
He expected Elise to appear after Amanda’s funeral and approve the remaining company transfer. When Katie stopped the service and police seized the accounts, the substitute plan failed.
The woman outside Amanda’s bedroom had not been trained to replace her socially.
She had been prepared to replace her financially.
Grace reviewed the meeting logs.
Elise appeared in three video conferences while Amanda was alive. The camera remained low quality. Robert told employees Amanda was recovering from migraines.
The real Amanda had no idea.
Her company had already experienced a partial replacement before her murder.
Ben Walker remembered one call.
“Amanda approved a payment I had previously heard her reject.”
“Why didn’t you confront her?” Lena asked.
“I assumed she changed her mind.”
“Did the voice sound different?”
“A little.”
“And?”
“Robert was beside her. I thought the connection was poor.”
Every participant possessed a small reason not to ask the next question.
Together, those reasons created enough silence for the fraud.
Elise contacted Grace directly.
“I want protection.”
“From Evelyn?”
“From the people who bought her training files.”
“Where are you?”
“First tell me Katie rejected the companies.”
“She did.”
Elise began crying.
“Then the successor program has no legal owner.”
“What happens now?”
“The representatives become liabilities.”
“To whom?”
“The investors whose crimes they witnessed.”
Elise had not visited Evelyn to help her escape. She wanted the location of the final identity archive.
Evelyn refused.
Elise stole the successor file from her attorney’s transfer bag and fled.
She agreed to surrender the file in exchange for safe entry into police custody.
Lena refused promises of immunity.
Elise accepted protection and separate review of her crimes.
She appeared at a public police station with both hands visible.
Her Amanda disguise had been removed.
She looked younger and frightened.
“How many people were trained?” Lena asked.
“Twenty-three.”
“How many identities?”
“More than one hundred.”
“Did you sign as Amanda?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Robert intended to kill her?”
“No.”
“Did you know he intended to declare her incapacitated?”
“Yes.”
“Why participate?”
“Evelyn paid for my mother’s medical treatment.”
“Did she threaten to stop?”
“Yes.”
“Did you still choose to impersonate Amanda?”
“Yes.”
Elise surrendered the last archive location.
It lay beneath a private theater Evelyn used for training presentations. Actors learned posture, voice, signatures, family history, and financial vocabulary.
Police raided the building.
Twenty-two representatives were gone.
The data servers remained.
One current training file had activated after Evelyn’s arrest.

Assignment:
Withdraw all challenges concerning Katie Carter.
A live video opened inside Grace’s office.
Another woman sat behind her desk wearing Grace’s clothes.
She looked toward the camera.
Then used Grace’s voice to say:

“Katie has decided Evelyn’s companies belong to her.”
