Chapter 5

Mave had survived by reading silence.
Silence before a door opened.
Silence after a phone call ended.
Silence when men were deciding whether she was still useful.
Now the black SUVs waited in the rain, engines running, headlights white against the cathedral stone.
No weapons appeared.
No one shouted.
No one rushed forward.
That restraint made her skin go cold.
The Hail family did not need noise to terrify people.
They used placement.
Timing.
Witnesses.
Debt.
Custody.
Names.
Fear wrapped in etiquette.
Garrett looked at her like he wanted to ask everything at once.
Where were you?
Why didn’t you call?
Why did you not tell me about Posie?
Who touched you?
Who threatened you?
Who made you believe I would not come?
But the questions stayed behind his teeth because Posie trembled between them and the convoy was moving closer without moving at all.
Mave respected that restraint.
It was new.
Or maybe it had always existed, buried under the family that raised him.
Coraline stepped nearer, rain soaking the edge of her gown gray.
“Mave,” she said.
Garrett’s head snapped toward her.
Mave froze.
Coraline smiled faintly.
“You should have stayed gone.”
Garrett’s face went still.
The kind of stillness that emptied the air.
Wesley moved one hand slightly, signaling the guards behind them.
No weapons.
No chaos.
Only a tightening circle around Mave and Posie.
Mave whispered, “She knew.”
Garrett stared at Coraline.
“How long?”
Coraline’s smile vanished.
“You are humiliating me in front of everyone.”
“How long?”
The wedding guests stood beneath the awning like statues.
Some looked horrified.
Some fascinated.
Some afraid because they recognized the shape of a family war beginning in public.
Coraline lifted her chin.
“I knew enough to understand she was never supposed to return.”
Mave shut her eyes.
Garrett looked as if something inside him had cracked cleanly in two.
Then Posie reached for him with her other hand.
“Don’t let the cars take Mommy.”
Garrett’s face changed.
Not rage now.
Vow.
He gently placed one hand over Posie’s tiny fingers.
“They won’t.”
Mave looked at him, terrified to believe it.
Behind them, the nearest SUV door opened wider.

Still no face revealed.
