Chapter 6 - The Founder Stands

Eleanor took one step out of the elevator.

The ballroom seemed to hold its breath.

It was not a fast step.

Not dramatic in the cheap sense.

Her orthopedic shoes touched the polished floor carefully, but with full control.

The gray shawl slipped farther, and the diamond necklace became unmistakable beneath the gala lights.

Several guests recognized it.

Not because it was expensive.

Because it had history.

Whispers moved through the ballroom and died quickly when Evelyn Price looked toward them.

Daniel stood aside, as if instinctively making room for his mother before he knew what the gesture meant.

Megan remained trapped inside the elevator beside the wheelchair.

The visual was brutal.

Eleanor in the light.

Megan in the cold elevator.

The wheelchair behind her.

The camera above.

Daniel between board and wife.

Eleanor turned toward Megan at eye level.

“The entire board just watched you.”

Megan’s eyes stretched wide.

“You can’t prove what they saw.”

Evelyn Price finally stepped closer.

“We saw enough.”

The words were quiet.

No vote.

No dismissal.

No final consequence.

Only enough.

That was more terrifying than a full explanation.

Megan’s face turned toward Daniel with desperate speed.

“She’s exaggerating.”

Daniel did not answer.

“Daniel.”

Still nothing.

Eleanor looked at her son.

“Ask yourself why your wife wanted me hidden before you took the stage.”

Daniel’s face changed.

The speech.

The gala.

The board.

His wife moving his mother to the service elevator before he addressed the room.

The humiliation was not isolated.

It had timing.

Purpose.

Daniel turned back to Megan.

“Why?”

Megan’s lips parted.

“I thought she would embarrass you.”

Eleanor laughed softly.

No joy.

Only disbelief sharpened by pain.

“By existing?”

Megan’s face crumpled.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The answer had been yes.

No one needed her to say it.

Evelyn Price looked toward the wheelchair, then to the camera.

“We should preserve the footage.”

Megan’s head snapped toward her.

“No.”

The panic in that single word was total.

Read Chapter 7 👉 Because preserving the footage frightened Megan more than the slap itself, and Daniel finally understood why.
