Chapter 9 - The Gala Behind Them

The gala did not resume.

Music had stopped somewhere without anyone ordering it.

Servers stood near the ballroom walls holding trays no one wanted.

Guests remained in clusters beneath chandeliers, looking between the elevator and the board.

The warm gala lighting made the scene more surreal.

Everything beautiful remained beautiful.

Flowers.

Crystal.

Gold.

Silk.

Marble.

Champagne.

But beauty no longer protected anyone.

Eleanor turned toward the ballroom, and the crowd parted.

Not dramatically.

Respectfully.

Carefully.

Daniel watched the movement with a face full of shame.

This was the respect his mother had earned long before he became CEO.

This was the respect Megan had mistaken for decoration.

Evelyn Price stepped beside Eleanor.

“Do you need assistance?”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No. But keep the wheelchair where it is.”

Megan’s eyes widened.

“Why?”

Eleanor did not look back.

“Because it belongs in the record.”

The word record landed like a gavel without showing any trial.

Daniel inhaled slowly.

Megan whispered his name.

He did not turn.

Not yet.

Eleanor finally faced him again.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her like a son, not a CEO.

That made the room ache.

“I am not asking you to choose in front of them,” Eleanor said.

Megan’s hope flickered.

Then Eleanor continued.

“I am asking you to see.”

Daniel’s eyes moved to the elevator.

The slap.

The insult.

The wheelchair.

The camera.

Megan.

His mother standing.

He nodded once, barely.

“I see.”

Megan made a small broken sound.

Evelyn Price observed the exchange with controlled authority.

No vote happened.

No dismissal occurred.

No one was removed.

But something had shifted in a way no public announcement could reverse.

Eleanor’s cheek still bore the mark.

Her diamond necklace glowed beneath the shawl.

Her eyes remained steady.

Megan stood in the elevator doorway shaking her head, silently begging Daniel to step back into the old version of the night.

He did not.

The board members began to move only slightly, forming a quiet line near Evelyn.

Not an attack.

Not a verdict.

A witness line.

Eleanor looked once more at the blinking camera.

Then at Megan.

Megan finally looked away.
