Chapter 6 - The Name Hart

William had once believed the Hart name meant protection.

Doors opened.

Hospitals answered.

Attorneys moved quickly.

Reporters kept distance.

Boardrooms softened their tone.

After Grace died, the Hart name surrounded him like armor.

Now, in the airplane cabin, it felt like a cage someone else had built around the truth.

Margaret had said his mother paid them to disappear.

Ava said Grace left proof.

The envelope in his hand carried handwriting he could not deny.

And still, the final truth waited inside sealed paper.

William looked at Margaret.

“How much?”

Margaret recoiled.

“What?”

“How much was my sister-in-law worth to my mother?”

Ava’s face tightened at sister-in-law.

The word placed her somewhere.

Not fully.

Not legally.

Not finally.

But somewhere closer than hidden daughter.

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t sell her.”

Ava whispered, “Then why did we move every time Mom tried to find us?”

William turned sharply toward her.

Grace had tried.

The sentence entered him like a blade.

“How many times?”

Ava looked down at Lily.

“Enough that I stopped unpacking.”

William closed his eyes.

The airplane seemed too small for the grief that filled him.

When he opened them, Margaret was crying silently.

“I was scared,” she said.

Ava’s voice hardened.

“So was I.”

Margaret looked at her.

“I had no power.”

Ava looked at William.

“She had your mother’s money.”

William’s jaw tightened.

He did not defend his mother.

That was the first small gift he gave Ava.

He did not say there must be an explanation.

He did not ask if she misunderstood.

He did not protect the family name before protecting the child in front of him.

He only looked at the envelope and said, “I’m listening.”

Ava’s shoulders trembled.

Those two words nearly undid her.

Because she had prepared for disbelief.

For lawyers.

For security.

For Margaret dragging her away.

For William taking Lily and calling her unstable.

She had not prepared for listening.

Lily touched William’s finger again, then leaned back into Ava.

William let her.

The choice mattered.

Ava noticed.

So did the passengers.

So did Margaret.

The Hart name did not decide the next move.
