Chapter 9 - Grace Left You Proof

William held Lily’s small back while Ava held the rest of her.
The baby calmed beneath both of them.
That image silenced even Margaret.
A father.
A hidden sister.
A child between them.
An unopened envelope in William’s other hand.
Ava finally looked at the paper.
“Open it later,” she said.
William’s eyes lifted.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
“If you open it here, everyone gets to watch my mom become evidence.”
The sentence struck him deeply.
My mom.
Not Grace.
Not your wife.
My mom.
William nodded.
“I won’t open it here.”
Ava exhaled shakily.
Margaret looked relieved, but Ava turned toward her.
“That doesn’t mean it disappears.”
Margaret looked down.
“I know.”
William slipped the envelope carefully into the inside pocket of his shirt, close to his chest.
Not hidden.
Protected.
Ava noticed the difference.
He looked at her patched backpack.
“Where were you going?”
Her face hardened slightly.
“New York.”
“Why?”
“To find you.”
He glanced at Lily.
“You were in economy.”
Ava’s cheeks flushed with humiliation.
“I bought what I could.”
William’s face tightened.
The idea that Grace’s daughter had sat in economy while he struggled in first class with Grace’s other child felt unbearable.
Not because economy was shameful.
Because the physical divide matched the lie too perfectly.
He looked toward the flight attendant.
“Can we arrange a seat for her here?”
Ava immediately stiffened.
“No.”
William stopped.
Ava swallowed.
“I don’t want to be moved like luggage.”
He nodded at once.
“All right.”
She looked surprised again.
Respect was beginning slowly, one refusal at a time.
Margaret whispered, “Ava, he’s trying to help.”
Ava did not look away from William.
“Then he can ask.”
William accepted the lesson.
“Ava, would you like to sit here near Lily for the rest of the flight?”
Ava’s eyes filled.
After a long moment, she nodded.
May you like
“Yes.”
