Chapter 4

Major Daniel Hayes had not seen Mara in three years.
Not in person.
Not since the hospital corridor where she woke asking for people who were not there.
He had written statements before.
Signed sealed declarations.
Sat through restricted briefings where attorneys asked how much could be said without endangering what still could not be said.
He hated every limit.
But limits existed for reasons.
Mara understood them better than anyone.
That was why her family’s lie had lasted so long.
Classified service creates silence.
Silence creates suspicion.
Suspicion creates opportunities for cruel people with clean suits.
Victoria had taken advantage of every gap.
No public file?
Then no service.
No mission details?
Then no mission.
No open medical explanation?
Then no proof.
Major Hayes carried a sealed federal folder because the truth had to enter through the correct door.
He could not tell the court everything.
He could not name the operation.
He could not identify the location.
He could not explain what Mara had done before the wreckage.
But he could confirm the thing Victoria had denied.
Mara had served.
Mara had been injured in service.
Mara had earned the medals in the shadow box.
And Major Hayes had been there when the scars began.
Outside the courtroom doors, the bailiff checked authorization twice.
The officers behind Hayes stood still, disciplined and silent.
Inside, they heard Caleb laugh.
“Because there was never a file.”
Major Hayes’s jaw tightened.
The bailiff opened the doors.

And the lie finally met a witness who did not need family permission to speak.
