Caleb recovered badly.
He always had.
As a boy, when caught lying, he would lie louder.
As a man, he had simply added better tailoring.
“This is emotional manipulation,” he said, standing too quickly.
His attorney grabbed his sleeve.
“Sit down.”
Caleb ignored him.
“She disappears for years, comes back with some officer, and suddenly we’re supposed to hand her the company?”
Mara turned her head slowly.
Not angry.
Tired.
The judge’s voice sharpened.
“Mr. Bennett, sit down.”
Caleb sat.
But the damage was done.
He had revealed the true fear.
Not stolen valor.
Not family shame.
The company.
Victoria’s face tightened.
She knew Caleb had said too much.
Major Hayes remained still beside Mara.
The sealed folder stayed unopened in his hand.
That was almost more powerful than opening it.
Everyone could see the boundary.
Enough truth to expose the lie.
Not enough truth for Victoria to twist into another story.
Mara’s attorney rose.
“Your Honor, the defense requests the witness confirm whether Captain Bennett’s service file exists.”
Victoria flinched at the rank.
Captain.
Not fake soldier.
Not troubled daughter.
Captain Bennett.
The judge looked to Major Hayes.
“Within your authorization, Major?”
Major Hayes nodded once.
“Yes, Your Honor. A service file exists. Portions remain classified under federal restriction.”
Mara inhaled shakily.
The courtroom heard it.
Victoria did too.
The lie had not merely weakened.
