Chapter 6

Officer Reed told me later the dispatcher heard everything.

The lighter.

My mother’s threat.

Beth’s demand.

My father’s silence.

Silence has a sound when danger is loud enough.

The officers were already near the house because Rachel had requested a welfare check the moment I said my family was at the door.

I did not know that.

All I knew was the pounding.

Linda froze with her hand still in my hair.

Beth’s eyes widened.

My father finally took one step forward.

Too late.

Officer Reed entered through the kitchen doorway with another officer behind him.

“Release her and put down the lighter.”

Linda let go as if my hair had burned her.

The lighter landed on the countertop and went out.

Beth immediately pointed at me.

“She’s lying. She’s trying to ruin my wedding.”

Officer Reed did not look at Beth first.

He looked at me.

“Ma’am, are you injured?”

My scalp hurt.

My hands shook.

My throat felt tight.

But I was standing.

“No.”

Then I corrected myself.

“I don’t know.”

That was the first honest answer.

The second officer moved Linda away from me.

My father said, “This is a misunderstanding.”

Officer Reed turned.

“Sir, step back.”

Robert stepped back.

Of course he did.

Beth checked her phone and began breathing quickly.

“Mom.”

Linda looked at her.

“What?”

Beth held up the screen.

“The venue payment failed.”

Then another alert came.

The dress.

Then the caterer.

Then the florist.

Rachel’s voice came through my phone on speaker.

“Joanna, all pending wedding disbursements are frozen. The trust account is locked pending extortion review.”

Linda lunged toward the phone.

Officer Reed blocked her.

I picked up the phone with one hand and the property folder with the other.

Then I looked at Beth.

“My attorney already froze every wedding payment.”

Beth stared at me as if I had murdered someone.

“My wedding is in six weeks.”

I touched my aching scalp.

“And my house closed six days ago.”

She cried.

This time, the tears did not move me.

Officer Reed collected the lighter.

The other officer asked Linda to turn around.

My mother looked at my father.

“Robert, do something.”

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

For once, doing nothing worked against her.
