Chapter 8

The trust review uncovered more than wedding pressure.
It always does.
Once a lawyer starts pulling thread, old fabric rarely survives.
Rachel found unauthorized attempts to access the Simpson Family Events Trust.
Linda had emailed vendors pretending to be me.
Beth had signed one contract listing my house as “available family collateral.”
Parker’s parents had been told I volunteered to cover any overage as a “gift to the couple.”
A gift.
That word made my skin crawl.
My whole life, theft became gift if Beth smiled while receiving it.
Rachel issued formal notices to every vendor.
No further payments.
No collateral.
No trustee authorization.
No wedding account access until the investigation ended.
Parker called me two days later.
I did not answer.
He left a voicemail.
“Joanna, I think there has been some miscommunication about expectations.”
Miscommunication.
Another elegant word for fraud when people wore nice clothes.
I forwarded it to Rachel.
Beth came to my house once.
Not inside.
She stood at the gate because I had changed the locks and installed a camera.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes swollen.
For a second, I saw the little sister who used to crawl into my bed during storms.
Then she said, “You’re really going to let my wedding fall apart?”
The memory disappeared.
“I didn’t build your wedding on lies.”
She gripped the gate.
“Mom could go to jail.”
“Mom held a lighter near my face.”
“She wouldn’t have actually done anything.”
I stared at her.
“You don’t know that.”
Beth looked away.
That was the first crack.
Not guilt.
Doubt.
Small, but real.
“She said you owed me,” Beth whispered.
“I know.”
“Because you always had more control.”
“No.”
“Because I learned to survive without being rescued.”
Beth began crying.
For once, she did not perform it.
No audience.
No mother translating.
No father smoothing the edges.
Just my sister at my locked gate, realizing that being favored had not made her strong.
It had made her dependent on other people being forced to give.
I did not open the gate.
Compassion did not require access.
“I hope you learn how to stand on your own,” I said.
May you like
Then I went back inside my house.
