Chapter 4

Detective Collins found the first missing piece in Lily’s phone.
It was cracked so badly the screen looked like black ice, but the internal storage survived.
The phone had been found in a hedge behind the science building, twelve feet from where Lily was found.
Whoever threw it thought broken meant erased.
They were wrong.
Detective Collins brought it to the hospital in a sealed evidence bag.
She did not show Lily the device.
She asked me first.
That respect mattered.
Lily was awake then, unable to speak, writing shaky answers on a small whiteboard Dr. Hale had given her.
When Detective Collins asked if she remembered the attack, Lily closed her eye.
Her hand tightened around the marker.
I wanted to tell her she did not have to answer.
But she opened her eye again and wrote one word.
Blake.
Then another.
Caldwell.
The marker slipped from her fingers.
I picked it up.
My hand shook so badly I had to set it down.
Detective Collins asked gently, “Was Dean Caldwell there?”
Lily stared at her.
Tears gathered.
Then she wrote:
car.
watching.
The room became very quiet.
Dr. Hale looked away, jaw tight.
I asked, “He watched?”
Lily nodded once.
Then winced from the pain.
I stood.
Detective Collins said my name once.
Not Colonel.
Daniel.
That stopped me.
She knew exactly where my body wanted to go.
She said, “Let me build it.”
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the phone in the evidence bag.
“Build fast.”
She did.
The recovered messages showed Blake asking Lily to meet him near the science building to “clear up a misunderstanding.”
She replied no.
He replied:
You already made this embarrassing.
Then:
My dad says you’re confused.
Then:
Come outside or I come into your dorm.
That message was sent at 8:59 p.m.
At 9:02, Lily called me.
At 9:14, she tried again.
At 9:19, she started recording audio.
It lasted forty-eight seconds.
Most of it was wind.
Footsteps.
Blake’s voice.
“You think you can file reports about me?”
Then Lily.
“Leave me alone.”
Then another male voice, older, calm.
“Blake, enough. Get in the car.”
Then the impact.
I could not listen past that.
Detective Collins did.
Her face did not change.
But when she removed the earbuds, her hands were white at the knuckles.
“The dean was there,” she said.
May you like
“And he did not call 911.”
