Chapter 6

The recovered campus footage came from a maintenance server no one had bothered to secure properly.
That was what Detective Collins told us later.
Universities build official systems for public confidence.
Then old equipment keeps telling the truth in corners.
The science building had three camera streams.
Main security archive.
Emergency backup.
Facilities maintenance mirror.
Someone erased the main archive.
Someone disabled the emergency backup.
But the maintenance mirror saved one low-resolution copy before the deletion.
Grainy.
Dark.
Enough.
Detective Collins did not play it for Lily.
She asked permission to show me in a separate room.
I should have said no.
A father should not have to watch his child be harmed.
But a witness cannot lead from imagination.
I watched.
The video opened with Lily crossing the path beside the science building, backpack over one shoulder.
Blake Caldwell stepped from behind a pillar.
He moved too close immediately.
Lily stepped back.
He followed.
She tried to walk around him.
He grabbed her arm.
She pulled free.
A black sedan sat at the curb.
Inside, Dean Caldwell watched through the windshield.
Not rushing.
Not calling.
Watching.
Blake shouted something the camera could not hear.
Lily lifted her phone.
That was when he struck her.
The first blow turned her head.
The second dropped her to one knee.
Then came the movement that shattered her jaw.
I stopped the video with one hand flat on the table.
Detective Collins waited.
She did not tell me to continue.
She did not tell me to calm down.
After a full minute, I said, “Play it.”
She did.
The dean got out only after Lily fell.
Not to help her.
To pull Blake away.
Then he looked around.
Checked the area.
Took Lily’s phone.
No.
He tried to.
But he did not find where it landed.
That mistake saved the case.
He put Blake in the car.
Then drove away.
Lily remained on the concrete.
Alone.
For eleven minutes.
Eleven minutes before a janitor found her.
Eleven minutes before anyone called 911.
I watched the timestamp crawl.
Something in me changed permanently.
When the video ended, Detective Collins said, “We have enough to arrest Blake.”
“And Caldwell?”
“We are building obstruction and evidence tampering.”
I stared at the blank screen.
“He left her there.”
“Yes.”
“Say that in your report.”
“I will.”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“Say it exactly.”
Detective Collins nodded.
“Dean Caldwell left Lily Mercer injured on the ground and fled.”
Good.
