Chapter 6

Harrison snapped when I mentioned the trust.

Not immediately.

First, he tried the performance of wounded husband.

“You’re doing this in front of our daughter?”

I turned Lily gently against my shoulder.

“No.”

“You brought this in front of our daughter.”

His jaw tightened.

“You followed us.”

“Your break-in followed me first.”

Patricia’s eyes flickered.

There.

She knew.

Maybe not all of it.

Enough.

Harrison stepped toward me.

Security moved between us.

I did not flinch.

That bothered him more than fear would have.

“That penthouse and trust belong to my family!”

His voice echoed against the glass counters.

For one second, everyone looked at me.

A showroom full of people waiting to see whether I would deny it too loudly.

I did not.

I unlocked my phone.

The security footage played silently.

Harrison.

The locksmith.

The drill.

The penthouse door.

No readable text.

No explanation needed.

Patricia’s mouth opened.

Harrison stared at the screen as if it had betrayed him.

I said, “Your family survived on money that was always mine.”

The sentence landed cleanly.

Not shouted.

Not emotional.

A fact delivered into bright showroom light.

Harrison tried to recover.

“That is our marital home.”

“No.”

“It was Lily’s home too.”

“Yes.”

“And you tried to break into it while she was asleep two floors below in her nanny’s apartment.”

He went pale.

He had not known I knew Lily had been in the building.

That was why I filed police immediately.

Not because of the trust.

Not because of jewelry.

Because my child had been close enough to danger for my patience to end.

Patricia whispered, “Harrison.”

His eyes stayed on me.

“You changed the locks.”

“After the court ordered you out.”

“I had belongings there.”

“Your attorney received the inventory.”

“You kept things from me.”

“Yes.”

“Access.”

That word made his face twist.

Access.

The thing he missed most.

Not me.

Not marriage.

Not family.

Access.

To the penthouse.

To the accounts.

To the trust.

To the doors my name opened.

The showroom doors swung open behind him.

Rebecca Shaw entered in a dark tailored suit, carrying a leather document folder.

Two police officers followed.

Rebecca looked calm enough to frighten everyone.

She stopped beside me.

Then looked directly at Harrison.

“The trust is hers.”

Her eyes moved to Patricia.

May you like

“And your break-in was recorded.”
